Question about Hotpoint Microwave Ovens
When replacing one of these, make sure you use the manufacturers exact replacement.
There have been some that have been manufactured in the past that are designed to protect the magnetron in the event the oven is run empty. This type of tray might still be in use. I'm not sure.

All that is required to crack/break an item that is microwave safe is a fine crack or deep scratch. Water will expand so quickly as the microwave energy heats up the water, it turns to steam and cracks the plate with the pressure build up.
