SOURCE: I have 16 hp Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine.

It may think you are in reverse and is killing the motor to keep you from backing up with the blade running. Look for switch that is telling it when you are in reverse, maybe it is stuck with grass or other debris. another possibility is that the blades are jammed and they are stalliing the motor. Mines stalls easily when cold.

SOURCE: Clutch/Brake Pedal Problem

first off your biggest problem is its built by MTD.they build about 90% of the riding lawn mowers you see in the stores that are 20 horse and under, every thing from a yard machine to a craftsman to a cub cadet. you need to get under it and fallow the linkage from your pedal to your rear transaxle. that link is adjustable if it is not , then the arm it attaches to is .you need to adjust it whichever way takes slack out of the belt, if all the adjustment is out then replace the belt and adjust it accordingly

you meant dis-engage im sure.
pedal up is engaged,
pedal at floor dis-engages it.

to the floor.

Craftsman Lawn Tractor 17hp 42 model 917.271662 auto trans idles and bucks when cutting grass

The symptom that you are feeling is that your transmission is not fully engaging correctly. Basically you have a few different things to try depending on the trans that is on your machine. Drain the fluid and re-install new fluid, adjust your brake/clutch to make sure that you are fully disengaged and fully engaged when you release the pedal. If none of those 2 cure your issue then you are looking at a trans rebuild or replacement

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

Here are the 3 safety switches.
Seat
Clutch Brake
and PTO Clutch

More ofthen than not the PTO Clutch gets a gap greater than 0.020 between the clutch and the clutch plate and the safety switch is not made. There are 3 bolts with springs and 3 slots in the PTO clutch. Adjust the tension on the springs until the gap is 0.020. Then try a start.

If it does not work:
Check out this diagram.. it is for your mower:
http://c.searspartsdirect.com/lis_png/PLDM/P0905008-00011.png

I found your particular model here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Craftsman-Parts/Riding-mower-tractor-Parts/Model-917288030/0247/1509200/P0905008/00011?blt=06&prst=0&shdMod=917288030

Parts can be located by choosing the diagrams under the small schematic. I think if you adjust the clutch you will be fine. The seat has to be occupied / switch shorted and the clutch brake pedal made to get power to the solenoid.

Respond ehre is you need more help.... Better yet let me know if the PTO clutch adjustment corrected the problem.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Craftsman riding mower Model 917.270824

I do not believe there is a manual available to the public for troubleshooting, however, you have at least 3 switches to tell the mower to stop when blades are engaged or clutch pedal released.

Seat switch
pedal switch
mower engage switch

The pedal and mower lever switches are identical, and have two sides, one for starting, one for blades turning. One side can fail. The pedal switch is on the frame very close to the pivot point of the pedal/shaft. The mower switch will be under the dash close to the bottom of the lever.

1) Locate and inspect the switches for broken or pinch wires, switch housing, or loose mounting, and how each lever or pedal engages the swtich.

2) This is a picture of the wiring so that you can get a better idea of location.

I have rjdeing lawnmower with a BRIGGS&STRATTON 13.5 OHL WHEN YOU PUT IT IN GEAR AND ENGAGE THE BLADE IT LOSES POWER WQNT RUN. FAMLEY 4BSXS.3442VM 275943

if you mean that when you let off the clutch pedal and/or engage the blades, the engine dies, lift the seat and make sure the connector is firmly plugged into the switch attached to the seat.

Drive belt keep falling off

you have belt guides near your pulleys that helps to keep the belt on during no engagement
you need to check to see if they are missing or bent and adjust as close to the pulley and belt as possible without interfereing with the belt and pulleys while engaged.IE: no rubbing against the pulley or belt while engaged or moving.
