Question about Arris SURFboard® SB5101 Cable Modem

1 Answer

Just had cable Internet installed and have had problems with it disconnecting every night at the same time, SB5101N Motorola. I have a wireless router, Belkin F5D8236-4, and was previously hooked up to my DSL. When this problem happens, the modem light on the router is flashing orange. I will then disconnect the router and plug my laptop directly into the cable modem. reboot both and cannot get on the internet. All lights on the modem seem correct, all solid except pc/activity which is flashing green. By the time, usually 7:30 to 9:00, and Charter, my ISP, can check it, they state that all is working fine. My question is, is there something wrong with the router, even though I cannot connect when directly plugged in? Is there something wrong with the modem rj45 plug? Is there a setting in my router, dynamic something, that changes after a period of time. I have changed it, but still cannot connect when directly plugged in? Sorry about the long post, tired of dealing with Charter. I know enough to be dangerous, so any ideas would be appreciated!

As long as your laptop doesn't have a firewall enabled then you should almost always be able to get connected by directly connecting your unit to the router.

Here is how to Determine if you Windows Firewall is enabled
Once it is disabled try resetting your Belkin back to Factory default Settings.
If all that still doesn't work I would attempt attaching it to the modem, and know once and for all if you router is working correctly.

Hope this help, and if it did please remember to leave Feedback/Testimonial. Thanks.

Have tried those things previously and no resolve. If I connect to the modem directly, i will not have internet. After 9:00 I will get low rates, 2.0 to 3.1, then off to the races, 11.0 to 19.0.
It is just odd that it has happened every night, 4, that we have had it installed.

When ever you have cable internet you are, what I like to call, "Slave to the Swarm.". Meaning your rate is determined by how much your neighbors/town is using it.

To me is sounds like Charter needs to come out and check your internet's signal strength, Its possible it is too low and could need to be amplified. A lot of the time they will just attach another splitter and then attach the modem to it, but they need to put the modem as close to the Line-In(the initial cable coming into the house) as possible. This way you get the clearest route to the i-net, because there is less "middle men" to interfere.

I have tried everything, i tried the command ipconfig renew but it doesnt show nothing, the modem (motorola sb5101n) has all the lights on and the pc activity blinks like everything should be working, but...

This could be a couple different things. One it could be the IPV6, if so disable it and it will work. If not then it also could be your antivirus blocking the connection (which i would check first) or it could be the vista IP configuration flag causing it which you would need to follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

Number three is the reset button, then it will be default, which is all listed below.

Can I use a wireless router with motorola phone tools. What I want to do is to connect phone tools on a desktop and then add a wireless router (USB) so I can get wireless internet on my laptop.

Your question is somewhat confusing.

For clarification, there are two questions that you could be asking.

The first question would be: Can your phone be 'Tethered' to your laptop with either a Data Cable or Bluetooth to have internet on your laptop by using your phone as a modem? (No wireless router is needed to do this.)

The second question would be, that you have an internet connection on your desktop computer and want to use a wireless router to have internet on your laptop via WiFi. (In this case, your cell phone would not be needed.)

If the first question is what you are asking, to use your cell phone as a modem to provide internet access to your laptop - then the answer is, Yes. This is what you will need:

1) You'll need a Data Plan added to your regular cell phone service account.

2) To tether your laptop to your phone, your laptop will need to have either Bluetooth installed or you will need a USB Data cable.

Tip: If your laptop does not have Bluetooth installed, you can purchase any USB Bluetooth Doggle (on eBay for a couple of dollars) and plug it into one of the USB ports on your computer. Once plugged in, the doggle will automatically download the Bluetooth drivers to your laptop. Otherwise, you can use a USB Data cable to tether your phone to your laptop.

Note: Depending on the model number of your Motorola phone you may have to download the Data Cable Drivers onto your laptop.

If your phone is not one of the following phones then you can use Motorola Phone Tools. (Motorola OS, Motorola Linux OS, Motorola iDEN, Motorola Symbian/UIQ, Motorola Windows Mobile and Motorola i-mode Handsets. )

If you need the Motorola Phone tools (if your Motorola Phone Model was NOT one of the models I listed above)
Just click here::

If your phone model is a (Motorola OS, Motorola Linux OS, Motorola iDEN, Motorola Symbian/UIQ, Motorola Windows Mobile or Motorola i-mode Handsets), you'll need to download the drivers for the Data Cable and install them on your laptop.
Since you did not include which cellular provider you use, I cannot provide you with the information to manually set up your cellular internet connection.

Now, if the second question is the one you are asking, that you have internet on your desktop and want to use a wireless router to get internet on your laptop, here's what you'll need:

1) Connect a wireless router to your desktop.
2) Your laptop should have a small WiFi switch or button on the front or side of your laptop. This will need to be turned 'ON". (See your owners manual for your laptop to do this.)

If your laptop has WiFi installed, on your laptop go to START > (Look on the right side of the menu box and click on: 'Connect to' -- If you don't see, 'Connect to' in the menu you'll have to purchase a USB WiFi adapter. A good one is a D-Link DWL-G132 and can be purchased on eBay for about $10. Install the drivers for it first before plugging it in to your computer.
Click here to download the DWL-G132 drivers:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/dwlg132/Driver/dwlG132_drivers_130.zip

Once you download the drivers and plug in the DWL-G132 into one of your laptop's USB ports then click, START > Connect to > and select your wireless router.

i doubt it will work. most times the cable companies give you a modem/router all in one box. the problem is there in no inbound connection to recieve an internet signal other than the cable cord connection. with the dsl modem you will need a seperate router. they cost around $40-50 on avg

Downloading Problem with Motorola SBG900 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway

Sounds like your laptop is hit with spyware and or viruses. Try starting it in safe mode (F8) and seeing if you still have this problem. If it works in safe mode go to grisoft.com and download the antimalware free trial. Restart in normal mode and install and run the trial version.
