Question about Seagate FreeAgent (ST305004FDA1E1-RK) 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Internal power supply has failed for the 2nd time in about 12 months, so I am now looking to salvage the HDD from the unit & recover the data to another storage device. Would appreciate guidance on how to set about disassembling the unit, rather than "rip / tear / bust" Thanks in advacne, Michael

I have a Samsung HM640JJ HDD. I bought the drive as an external in an enclosure. The drive has stopped spinning all-together. I even tried to put the HDD in my laptop but will not spin. Samsung will not...

If the hard drive can't be detected by your computer, you can try this way.
Put the hard drive in a plastic bag to be compatible for the freezer. Freezing sometimes works to revive a dying hard drive, at least for a short time(Probable just about 20 minutes), but be sure that the bag is sealed tightly so that condensation and ice crystals don't form. Put it in your freezer for 24 hours that will do the trick. While it's still cold, plug it into your computer. And you may be able to view it in 'my computer'.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery program.
Tenorshare data recovery is a professional data recovery program that can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage, virus attack etc.You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply data recovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover data is not guaranteed.

Give me a site for cheking hdd warrenty

From the manufacturer's web-site:

http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/search/supportSearchResultView.do?group=&group_cd=&type=&type_cd=&subtype=&subtype_cd=&model_nm=HD502HJ+&dType=D&mType=&model_cd=&menu=repairpolicy&prd_ia_cd=&disp_nm=HD502HJ+

the warranty for the HD502HJ is "12 months".

Many of the drives sent to SAMSUNG for exchange, are actually defect-free. Often, there are configuration issues or corrupt data causing the difficulty. Before you send your drive in for exchange, we suggest that you try the following troubleshooting option. Many times this down-time and inconvenience caused by unnecessarily removing, exchanging, and re-installing the hard drive.

Click: On-line hard disk troubleshooting page

to run "checks" against your disk-drive.

Many Bad Sectors fat32, trying recovery disk

Hi,

It sounds like your HDD is faulty, usually a hardrive can operate with bad sectors but still a risk.

My best advice would be to get a new HDD and recover back on to the new one, even if you did manage to recover onto your current one you may still have problems in the future.

I usually only allow a HDD to fail S.M.A.R.T tests 3 times over any given period and then I just replace them.

Thanks

Alternatively you may be able to resolder the USB port, maybe an electronics savy friend with a soldering iron will help you with this. If you want somebody else to do it for you there is Data Recovery NYC. Also there is good informaation on logic board repairs on hddguru.com.

Error message: Failed- Replace Hard Disk 1 (Warrany ID error code 10008) what does this mean I have a compaq Presario A900

It means that Hard Disk 1, which is either the first or second harddisk in the laptop, has failed. First open the BIOS on your latop. Before windows startup there should be a Compaq logo on screen. There also is some text saying which key to press to access BIOS. In BIOS, try opening some menus and look for a menu that shows your disk drive. In the same menu should be your harddisk. If it is there, go to A. If not, go to B. A: The disk is not broken, it just made a write error that destroyed WIndows. Insert the disk with your operating system on it into the laptop, and reinstall it. Your data is gone, but the laptop will work. If reinstalling the OS gives errors, and is unable to complete, go to B. B: Your harddisk is broken. There is no way to fix it, and you will need a new one. Contact Compaq if your warranty is still valid, and if not, take it to the nearest computer shop and ask for a new harddisk. If you have any more questions or trouble just post back here. I hope this helps, Yannick

No power - can I recover the hard drive with my Windows PC?

I just learned the hard way about the way the DMR-E85H manages the internal harddrive. The format information and the table of contents of all recorded video are stored on the unit, not on the HD. I tried the same thing - removed the HD and put it on the PC. Recognized the physical drive but found no partitions and said it was 100% unallocated. I tried a data recovery program (Nucleus Kernel for FAT and NTFS Demo) but it found no file information at all. I have a healthy E85 and a broken one (that I just bought hoping to fix it). I swapped HD's and formatted HD #2 on the healty unit - so I knew that HD was ok. When I put HD #1 back into the healthy unit, the unit immediately wanted to format it (I powered off at that point). By switching drives, the unit lost ALL information about the first drive. Then I put HD#2 back in and interestingly enough, even though it didn't ask to refomat it, the table of contents was gone (there was 1 program I had recorded to test it). So - if you get your unit repaired, it MAY retain the HD info and you will get your programs back. However, the repair may involve clearing the unit memory about your HD and in that case, your drive's data won't be recognized by the E85.
>>> now with all that said, MAYBE there is a data recovery utility somewhere that can extract the video data from the drive - did anything come of the reference to using a torrent client? I'd be curious to know as I still have my HD #1 with program info that the E85 can no longer see. I'd like more info if anyone has it on a powerful data extractor - but otherwise I hope this detail will be helpful. Shawn

Dropped my Maxtor 80GB USB HDD, ouch. Salvage my data?

Check out Maxtor for analysis tools and referrals of course. There are books out there on exactly what to do, but of course there are also firms who will offer to recover data you didn't back up for a price (ca. $400, say; it's not wild competition there, somehow.)
