Replace the switch! It shut down when battery get depleted. and then when you start it again the cycle is shorter because the batery regenerate but not as previous cycle.

My Dyson DC 14 is about 5 years old now and when I push the on/off switch it starts, but it won't stay on unless I hold down the on/off switch.

Sounds like you would have to get the on/off switch replaced. You could try one thing prior to trying to replace the switch or taking it in for repair. After 5 years of use there may be some dirt that got into the switch. Unplug the unit and spray some Contact Cleaner (available at Radio Shack) or some WD 40 into the switch area. Use a bit of it so it can work its way into the switch. Then, here comes the good part, turn the switch on and off for a few minutes. The action will somewhat clean the contacts of the switch IF the cleaner was able to get into the switch. If you try this and it does not work, the next step I would take would be to disassemble the unit and get at the switch to see if wires have come of and if they have not, check the continuity of the switch and last ditch fix, replace the switch. Hi its Darran at Dyson.

The first check would be to see if the brush bar is turning when the machine is switched on and in the vacuuming position. To do this, release the head and lie the machine on its side. Switch it on and check the brush bar making sure long hair and fingers are kept out of the way.

If the brush bar is turning, you will need to check the machine thorugh for blockages and clean the pre filter as these are the most likely cause of a loss of performance.

If this does not resolve the problem or if the brush bar is still not turning, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards

CLEANER SWITCHES ITSELF OFF AFTER A FEW MINUTES USE. IF LEFT FOR SOME TIME, IT WILL START AGAIN FINE, THEN AFTER A FEW MINUTES MORE USE , IT WILL SWITCH OFF AGAIN.

check all filters, if they can be washed do so, if not clean or replace. next check for a clog in the machine and in the hoses. the machine as a thermal device that if it senses an overload or getting to hot, the machine will shut itself off for safety resons.

It just won't work. battery ok but it won't come

Debbie,
These models are notorious for dirt getting into the buttons on the top and then the switches no longer work.
It's not a terribly tough job to replace the button circuit board and replacement parts are available.

the automatic cut out switch on the motor needs replacing when the motor gets hot this switch comes in and stops the motor from overheating when the motor cools down the cleaner will work again and cut out again when the motor gets hot if it is not replaced it will eventually burn the motor out after the switch has been replaced both the filter and cyclone need to be cleaned on a regular basis or the same will happen again

Filterqueen cuts out when warm

You should check the disc filter that is located under the paper cone support. The support is secured with a single screw in the middle at the bottom. This filter is commonly overlooked and when it gets dirty will restrict airflow and cause the motor to overheat. Most motors have a Hi-Limit switch incorporated into the motor to protect against overheating. You should also check the top filter (which is probably foam) and replace if it is clogged.
