My system is running slow


Slow computer If you have a virus program installed, it is most likely is running a scan on your hard disk. It can slow down your computer especially if you have a large hard drive. After scanning is completed then the computer will be faster.
To make your computer (hard disk) lean and mean, uninstall any programs you do not use.
Also you need to maintain your hard disk by running Disk Cleanup this will remove old temp files and old compressed files etc.
This will reduce the number of files the virus scanner has to scan. Plus running Defrag. this makes your files contiguous so the system can access files off the hard drive quicker because it does not work as hard.. Disk Cleanup and Defrag should be carried out at least once a month.
If you have 512Mb of RAM installed then installing more RAM will speed up your computer. After installing your graphics card, you may need to disable the built-in graphics card in the BIOS for the new graphics card to work properly.

Hi,
The problem is the MacBook is unable to find the "designated" boot device. The problem can caused by several things. The most likely is also the worst possible cause. The most likely problem is that the hard disk is not working correctly. To diagnose the problem follow the following steps:
  • If you have your original disks, boot the install disk
  1. Restart the computer
  2. Insert boot disk in the optical drive as soon as you turn on the computer
  3. Hold down the 'c' key on the keyboard to signal the MacBook to use the optical disk to boot the computer.
  4. Once the computer is booted, use the Disk Utility from the Utilities menu to examine and if necessary repair the hard disk.
  1. Start by ensuring that your internal hard disk is listed.
      • If your disk is not listed, then your hard disk is definitely having a problem. If you are lucky, it maybe just that one of the cables has become disconnected. I believe on your MacBook, the hard drive is accessible by removing the battery and the hard disk is located next to the battery. You would need to post your model number to get exact instructions.
  2. If so, then run the Verify Permissions and Verify Disk. Run repair if there are any errors detected.
  1. Once you have checked and repaired the hard disk, exit Disk Utility and run Startup Disk from the Utility menu.
  2. Select your Hard Disk and click Restart
If you are lucky, the computer will run again. If not, check your install discs. The original install discs usually have a hardware diagnostic which can be run by holding down the 'd' key while booting. You can try running the diagnostics to see if you can diagnose the cause of the booting problem. You can also use the diagnostics if your hard disk is not shown in the Disk Utility to run diagnostics on the hard disk.

We did a fresh install but pc is way to slow.it takes 20-30 minutes to finally come up to the desktop.we have tried everything we know but no results.


My first guess is that your hard drive is failing. Try running chkdsk:

How to Defrag a Dell Computer
1. Open the My Computer window. To do this on a Dell computer, click on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen. Then, click "My Computer".
2. Choose the hard disk drive that you want to defrag. Locate the section entitled "Hard Disk Drives." In this section is a list of hard drives on the computer. For most Dell computers, the hard disk drive you will want to defrag is Local Disk (C:).
3. Right-click on the hard disk drive you want to defrag on the Dell computer. If you want to defrag your C: drive, then right-click on "Local Disk (C:)". A menu bar will appear.
4. Click on "Properties." "Properties" is the last option on the menu bar. This opens the Local Disk (C:) Properties window.
5. Click the "Tools" tab. The Tools tab is the second tab in the Local Disk (C:) Properties window. The tabs are located on the top of the window.
6. Click the "Defragment Now" button. The "Defragment Now" button is in the Defragmentation section of the window. This opens the Disk Defragmenter window.
7. Click to select the disk drive you want to defrag on a Dell computer and then click "Defragment." For most Dell computers, this will be (C:). After you click "Defragment," the Dell computer will first analyze the disk drive you selected and then beginning defragging the Dell computer.
8. Wait for the "Defragmentation is Complete" message.   • Prepare to diagnose the computer .
    1. Disconnect all peripheral devices.
    2. Perform a Hard Reset.
    3. Disable the Automatic restart on system failure option.
  • Remove any non-system disc from the computer . During startup, the BIOS checks different devices to locate the Windows operating system. If the boot order is set to check the optical disc drive or the card reader (if the notebook is equipped with a card reader) before it checks the hard drive, and there is a non-system disc in the CD/DVD drive or there is a memory card in the card reader, the boot will fail. This problem can be resolved by setting the BIOS to check the hard drive first.
  • Reseat the memory modules . If you are getting memory errors, most BIOS versions have additional tests that can be run to test the memory. There could be a problem if one of the sticks is defective or loose in the memory slots. To determine what is causing the memory failure, disconnect all electrical power, and then remove and re-insert the memory modules firmly into the slots. Some HP Notebook PCs come with two sticks of memory and have two memory slots. On most notebooks, the memory module compartment is located on the bottom of the case, but the exact position varies by model. On some models, the memory compartment is under the keyboard. See your User Guide for the exact location of memory modules on your notebook.
  • Reset the BIOS to default condition . If you have made changes in the BIOS setting, such as disabling a device or changing the boot order, it could prevent the computer form starting properly. To restore the BIOS to its factory-recommended settings, turn on the computer and press f10 to access BIOS setup, and then press f9 to load the default BIOS configuration.
  • Perform a memory self test . There are different reasons that you may see a memory error. There could be a physical problem or it could be a program error. If the error is a program error, you will most likely see a Windows error message. If there is a physical problem with a memory module, the computer may fail part way through the boot process. Most computers have a built-in memory test to help identify if the memory modules are seated properly and are free of errors. To run the memory test, turn on the computer and press f2 .
    • If the System Diagnostics screen displays, select the Start-up Test to run the system memory test. Press the Esc key once the memory test is complete.
    • If the BIOS Diagnostics screen displays, select Memory Test .
  • Reseat the hard drive . If you get a specific hard drive error message on a black screen indicating the hard drive error, reseat the hard drive. If the computer has been dropped or jarred, or the hard drive has been replaced recently, the drive may not be seated tightly. The hard drive LED should blink if the hard drive has a solid connection in the notebook. Refer to the on-line User's Guide for specifics on locating and removing / replacing a hard drive. HP provides video directions for performing this task for many computer models. Remove and reseat the hard drive firmly into the mounting bracket.
  • Test the hard drive . If you get a hard drive error message, you can test the hard drive. Many computer problems are related to soft failures (or degraded performance) on the hard drive. The HP Hard Drive Self Test will repair soft errors on the hard drive, but it will not report the errors. After the test is complete, restart the computer to see if test repaired the problem you may been experiencing. To run the hard drive test, turn on the computer and press f2 .
    • If the System Diagnostics screen displays, select the Hard Disk Test to run the hard drive test. Allow the Quick and Long Hard Disk Self Tests to run.
    • If the BIOS Diagnostics screen displays, select Primary Hard Disk Self Test . Allow the Quick and Long Hard Disk Self Tests to run.

    Laptop hard drives are mainly located underneath. A screw holding down a plastic lid covers the drive. In some cases of older laptops the hard drive is slot mounted and you'll have to remove screws underneath and/or on the side to release the drive followed by pushing a switch which well push the drive out.

    verify your bios settings with regards to what the pc is expecting in way of hard drive.
    Do you have the luxury of another hard drive that you can try on this pc ? - this will 'suggest' where the problem rests.
    Make sure the lead is fully located on the back of hard drive.
    If possible - change the lead for a 'known working' lead (Maybe from the computer that your hard drive was recognized in)
