Question about Lowrance iWAY 350C GPS Receiver

2 Answers

I have an I Way 350c and it has been exchanged at the factory (in warranty) for the same problem before. I have used these GPS's hard and there is about 50,000 miles on it. Within a year after using it some features start to be hard to operate and sometimes must push multiple times on touch screen to get GPS to follow instructions. I notice the maps start to load slower. Eventually it will not load the image files and there is a lit up blank screen with only a cursor on it. If you have a favorite address saved it will appear on the screen where it would be on the map but there is not a map shown. Just a blank lit up screen. If I do a hard start (Hold down on-off button for about 10 seconds) sometimes I can get the map to appear and then sometimes it doesn't. When the map appears it may work for a few minutes but it will suddenly show a fade to black and turns off in about two seconds. I have played around trying to get it to load the map and find if I keep it in standby mode the map will stay on the screen longer. Also after I loaded the latest 1.5 update it appears to work longer before the map starts to disappear. Each time I reload the same update again it seems to function better for a while. It was diagnosed as having a hard drive problem before and that is probably the problem again. Now that much time has passed since the 350c was made I would think the entire operating system and update could be put on a SD card since they are much larger in capacity now then when the 350c was made. I may not understand the operating system concept but it would be great if they would sell that SD card as I mentioned. Many map updates are sold that way. Is this a possibility? As you can tell I really like the Lowrance and it is much easier to read even for a small screen. The detail may be crude but it has more detail than other GPS models. I'm only interested in function and not frills. Colors, Cameras, Blue-tooth, 3D etc. are gimmicks for the uneducated consumer.

I gave very specific detailed symptoms of what occurs withe my Lowrance 350 GPS in my original statement. The problem has nothing to do with the SD card used to download updates. In the reply I was given information about the kind of SD card that is usable in that GPS from Fixya. I don't know why! I am aware of the correct SD card and mentioned in my original statement that I have loaded the most recent download (Update 1.5) many times which seems to make the Lowrance GPS more stable for a while. If the wrong SD card was used I could not do the download.
This problem most likely is with the hard drive and I question if there is a way to reload the original software, (The Lowrance 350 operating system) on the hard drive or to load it externally on a SD card along with the 1.5 update. The external operating system on a SD card would allow the operating system to be duplicated and reused if the operating system is failing and is what is causing the problem I have previously described.

Hi,

According to your problem the lithium battery may caused for this malfunctioning. So first try to change the battery. The operating also my be corrupt or it need update. Reload the operating system in internal Hard drive is recommended. If you want to load OS in external SD card then you need enough space for future updates and it is critical also. So I suggest to use Hard drive for OS.

But make sure the Hard drive is not faulty. If there is any problem in hard drive you can replace it.

Use external SD card for MP3 player or small application. To update your OS contact lawrence website. Reset your total system and the screen resolution also.

Well from them, SD 2.0 memory cards will not work with the iWAY 350C. This includes all SD memory cards over 4GB in size, most 4GB, and some 2GB memory cards. however, lower spec SD cards sould work.

One day my nuvi 245 continues to show "press dot". So I keep pressing dot only for somewhile because after just 1 second from "turning on" touch screen does not work. That means even...

Your touch sensitive screen may have failed. The touch sensitive screen is a thin transparent film that is secured over the front of the display screen.

When it fails, you can no longer select or input anything into the GPS via screen. This of course renders the GPS pretty much useless. Garmin will exchange your defective GPS with a factory refurbished unit with the latest maps and provide a 90 warranty for many GPS units. The Nuvi 250 service cost is $69. I could not find your Nuvi245 model listed so you might want to contact Garmin directly to see what the replacement cost will be.

I hope this helps & good luck. Please rate my reply. Thank you.

Frozen screen

Most GPS problems - Hangs, frozen screens, problems acquiring satellites, ETC, can be attributed to the device not having the latest firmware installed.
This firmware enables it to communicate with the satellites - but if they aren't speaking the same language they get confused easily. For Garmin GPS Automotive units, Garmin has you do the following before sending it in for repairs:
1 - SOFT RESET
2 - HARD RESET (CLICK HERE to see instructions for either reset)
3 - UPDATE the device using their WebUpdater software (CLICK HERE for that) Garmin is the only company that offers repairs AFTER the warranty has expired. They offer a FLAT RATE REPAIR service for units no longer in warranty. For other GPS units please consult your owner's manual or their support site - as each model - and even manufacture dates - can lead to different reset procedures. TomTom
NAVIGON

MAGELLAN NEXTAR - does NOT offer any types of Firmware or map upgrades or repair services. Instead - they have an exchange program to update to a new UNIT for around the same price as a repair would be. CLICK HERE for more on that. WARRANTY on most GPS devices is 1 year from the date of purchase.

Broken screens are considered ABUSE - and not covered under warranty.

Finally - If your unit is on the charger for HOURS, You've tried both the car AND USB type charger, and you turn it on... it stays on for a minute (or so) then powers down or never comes on at all - the battery has lost it's ability to hold a charge and must be replaced. Looking around YouTube - you can get a tutorial on how to CAREFULLY crack open just about any GPS. The tool(s) necessary typically are included with the battery purchase. Typically batteries run about $25 +/-. NiCd batteries are meant to be energized once a month so they keep active, and don't build up deposits that lead to their premature failure.

I hope this was helpful for you.

I won this GPS and it is telling me that it needs up dates how do I get the updates and do they cost

The updates it is referring to are the NAVTEQ database updates. This is the turn by turn street mapping and an update is available every year. You can purchase updates from the Lowrance accessories website http://www.lei-extras.com/store/search.asp?SearchType=Unit&Unit=iWAY+350C. The part number for this update is 95-63.

But you don't NEED this update. It costs $74.99 and may not even include updated street information for where you are. I would use it as is and if you think the street mapping is too behind, take the $74.99 and put it into a new Automotive GPS...you can get really good ones for under $100 now.

I do recommend installing the latest firmware update for the iWay 350 from http://www.lowrance.com/en/Products/Automotive/iWAY-350C/Downloads/iWAY-350C-Software-Update/.

Iway 350c GPS battery

I don't know if this is the recommended way. Hold the unit facing you and look at the top of the unit. There is a seam about ¼” from the front. I simply used a small jewelers screwdriver and inserted it at the top of the unit about 1" from the side. I lifted the front section a little bit. It released one of six tabs that hold the face plate in place (two on top and two on each side). Repeat the same step on the other side then the sides. When you remove the face plate the silver on/off button will fall out, but don’t worry about that. Here is the tricky part. It has four star screws holding the back of the case to the electronics unit. I took a trip to the local Harbor Freight store and bought a star wrench set for $3.99. Remove the four screws and presto you can take the back casing right off. The batteries are at the bottom, but I can’t find any info on what type they are, so I don’t know what to replace them with, at least not yet.
