Dear Thumper:

If you set the password for windows please try the steps
below if it is bios password you need to contact your
computer manufacturer
Reboot your machine.
Press F8 before the Windows boot screen appears.
You will be be prompted with a boot options menu.
Select the Start Windows in Safe Mode option.
Click through several self-explanatory screens until your
reach the familiar 'Welcome' screen.
Note that this welcome screen is limited to 256 colors and
640x480 resolution because the primary graphics will have
been set to the Windows Safe Mode software VGA adapter. You
will not be able to change this mode even in Display options,
while Windows is running in Safe Mode.
Find the icon for the Administrator user. If the default
settings of your system haven't been changed, there should be
no password for this account.
The Safe Mode Welcome screen might display some of the other
users on your system.
Login as the admin.
Press Yes at the prompt asking if you would like to continue
using Safe Mode.
Continue on to the User Settings control panel. Here you can
change any of the other passwords for user on the machine.
Make any changes you want.
Reboot your computer. As long as you don't press any keys
(i.e. F8) during the boot-up the computer will startup
normally.
Login as the user for which you set the password.

Please feel free to get back to me If you need any further
assistance.
Regards,
Mohammed.

How to Password Protect And Access a Password-Protected Word Document

How to Password Protect a Microsoft Word Document If you are working on documents that are important and shouldn’t be changed, then there is a way to password protect them so they cannot be changed except by you. You can also make the documents unavailable to open unless the person has the password as well.
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
  • A Computer
  • Microsoft Office with Microsoft Word
  • Word Documents
  • General Knowledge of Microsoft Word
Step 1
Open Microsoft Word and open or create the document that you want to password protect.
Step 2
Click on “File” in the toolbar and select “Save As”.
Step 3
Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Security Options”.
Step 4
This will open a “Security Options” window. You may now set a password under the “Password to open” box, “Password to modify” box or both.
Step 5
Once you type in the password of your choosing you can opt to make the file “Read-only” by checking the appropriate box. You may then click “OK” to save your changes and then save your document as usual.
How to Access a Password-Protected Word Document Accessing a password-protected Microsoft Word document is only possible when you have the correct password that opens the document. Encryption and security levels differ for separate versions of Word. Microsoft 2007 doesn’t offer any solutions to allow a user to retrieve forgotten passwords and Microsoft does not allow its employees to help in retrieving or breaking passwords. If you do not have the correct password for the document, you will be unable to access it.
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
  • Microsoft Word
  • Document password
Step 1
Navigate to the location on your hard drive where you stored the Word document.
Step 2
Double-click on the document to begin opening it. A separate window will appear that prompts you to enter the document password.
Step 3
Enter the password, which is case-sensitive.
Step 4
Click the “Open” button or hit the “Enter” key. If the password was correct, the document will open. If it was not correct, another window will display advising you the password was incorrect and prompting you to try again.

Locked out of my computer

Which Password? Bios Password?Hard Drive Password? Windows Welcome Screen User Logon Password?

Which Operating System? Windows XP? Windows Vista?Windows 7?OK,if you are running Windows 7, Microsoft tightened security on it so you've gotto have a password reset disk which 99% of the people who own laptops withwindows 7 fail to do. It should be one of the first things you do whenyou buy the laptop. Otherwise, you're faced with reinstalling theOperating System or possibly doing a System Recovery.

If you're on Windows XP or Vista try this:

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on andimmediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Safe Modeoption. Select SAFE MODE and let the computer boot up. When it getsto the User Login screen it will show the Administrator userid and the useridfor which you forgot the password. Sign in as the Administrator(hopefully you didn't put a password on it and forgot it too). Once thedesktop appears it will look different, the screen will be darker and the iconsbigger, but this is normal for safe mode.

Click Start/Control Panel/User Accounts
When the User Accounts screen opens, click on the userid for which you forgotthe password. Select the option to REMOVE PASSWORD.

Reboot your machine.

Forgot sign in password

If you could sign in your computer from a restart with a list of users on the screen, those users might not with a password. So you can try sign in with any of those user name you ever saw and without password. If the account you sign in with is with the administrative permission, you will be able to reset the password of any user accounts on your computer. (I will give you all the detailed steps with a Microsoft document linked below.) If your computer is connected to a network, you can try to login with the accounts with the administrator's permissions on the network and reset any password of any user accounts on your computer. They might be assigned the administrator's rights on your computer too.
If all the user accounts are not good for the login on your computer or without administrator's permission, you can reset the password still if you have created a password reset disk.
If those two approaches do not work, you might need to reinstall Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 on your computer and all the applications.

The detailed steps are described by the following document.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305

If you like to backup your data before reinstallation to make sure your data will be safe, you can move the hard disk to another computer and copy your data over. Please don't hesitate to turn to me if any questions.

Laptop HDD is now locked

The hard drive password is setup from the BIOS configuration.
To remove the password you need to go into the BIOS configuration and you need to get the password from your brother.
There are no backdoor passwords, if you cannot get the password or guess the password then you need a new hard disk. If he has also set a BIOS password (you need this to get into the BIOS configuration), otherwise he owes you a new computer.

At the windows login screen there should be a link or button you can click on and enter your key. Sounds like the person that fixed it didn't validate it. Did you install new hardware? If so, you'll probably have to call microsoft to validate.
