That could be contamination on a spark gap. Does it still "tick"? or it requires replacement/repair by a repair person. Is it battery powered and the batteries are flat?

I am painting in my kitchen and it is recommended to turn off stove pilot gas so know combustion happens. I have a Tappan gas stove that says "electronic ignition" on it. How do I turn off...

Hi,
If you have an electronic ignition, there are no open flames. So you are ok to paint. Just make sure to not turn anything on while the paint fumes are in the air and you will be good.
If you do want to turn off the stove, unplug it from the wall. To turn the gas off you will need to pull it away from the wall and turn off the valve behind it, if it has a valve, some do not.

Top left burner (propane) does not seem to be receiving gas when trying to ignite it with electrical igniter (control knob). However the burner can be lit with a match when the control knob is turned past...

The igniter usually sparks for all burners on the stove at the same time. Usually a little water or gravy, or such has gotten on the little spike that stick up and throws the spark to the burner. If you will take a small brush, like a tooth brush and carefully clean around the little spike it normally starts sparking again. As it is right now, you should be able to see the spark on all the burners whenever you start any of the burners. Check to see on the one that is not lighting, I think you will find that it is not sparking at all right now.

We have a 6 burner, nat gas cooktop....all unit light but the igniter clicking will not stop...unplugged it . question: all mechanics are closed is this safe gaswise?

What happens in this style ignition system is that the thermostat or electronic control switches power to the oven ignitor and gas valve circuit which are connected in series (one after the other). As power flows through the ignitor it heats and draws current (measured in amperage). Once the oven ignitor draws a specific amount of current the oven valve opens to allow gas to flow to the oven burner where the glowing hot ignitor (glow bar) ignites it. Power must continually flow through the ignitor and oven gas valve for gas to be released into the oven burner to create a flame. Once the set temperature is achieved the control stops all power to the ignition circuit which causes the ignitor to dim and the oven gas valve to close, stopping any burner flame. Cycling on and off continues to maintain the specific temperature the control is set for.

Electronic ignitor does not recognize that flame is on thus does not stop clicking

A generic troubleshooting response would be...... if the burner won't stay on, either the igniter or the ignition module (or both) are bad. If the burner ignites and stays on but the spark module keeps trying to ignite, the module must be bad.

you might be able to just clean the ignitor to get it working again. Take it out and give it a good cleaning. If that doesn't work then it could be your spark module. If it is your spark module it will have to be replaced. I have replaced spark modules and ignitors of ovens or ranges that you can no longer get parts for with whirlpool modules and ignitors. There are basically two types, just make sure you get the same type. One type , typically used by GE uses a continous ignitor that glows when it works, and Whirlpool (on most models) uses the spark module and ignitor that makes the clicking sound like your oven did for ignition.
