Could you please precise the circumstances?
What lens are you using? Is there a switch (A)uto/(M)anual on the lens?
What are the positions of the switches on the lens and on the camera body(C/S/M)?
My guess either your camera or the lens are switched in the M(manual) mode.
But, sure, it could be also caused by using the old manual lens or camera/lens malfunction.
So please be as precise as you could. And we will find a solution ) Thanks

The lens will work with any Nikon film SLR, including the FG-20. However, the FG-20 is not an autofocus camera. Whether the lens is capable of autofocusing or not, you'll still have to focus manually. With a newer autofocus camera, such as the N75 and N80, the lens will autofocus.

What digital nikon cam works autofocus in a nikkor micro AF 105mm f/2.8D?

This lens lacks the autofocus motor, so it will only autofocus on cameras with the motor. This lens will autofocus on every Nikon digital SLR except for the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, and D5100. It will autofocus with the D1 family, D2 family, D3 family, D50, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D300s, and D700 (I hope I haven't left any out).

Autofocus

Reset.

Press and Hold the INFO button near the trigger and 'I' button at left side bottom for few seconds. Once the information appears on the LCD screen, your autofocus should be working.

Orelse, carry it to an authorised service centre.

Nikon 18-55 zoom lens doesn't autofocus

You might like to check if the A/M slider switch on the lens by the Nikon label is set to A.
It sometimes gets moved accidently.
Set to M the lens will not autofocus.

Autoocus doesn't work

The first thing to check is that autofocus is enabled on the camera body.

The auto/manual focus selector switch is located on the front of the camera, just below the lens release button (on the left side as you look through the view finder). Make sure that the white dot on the selector lines up with the white dot under the AF (autofocus).

If this does not solve the problem, make sure that your lenses are set to autofocus mode as well.
