Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Turntable not rotating

How expensive it is to repair (self-repair, or repairman)? It sounds OK when I rotate it manually (watched the YouTube). It's a 7-year old microwave. Should we be replacing it?

I fixed my own GE turntable by replacing the motor. You can purchase the part (#WB26X10135) directly from GE for $34.75 plus tax and shipping ($8.95) or from RepairClinic.com for $24.90 plus shipping ($6.46) and no sales tax except for delivery in Michigan.

The part is easy to install. Just print out this drawing to see where it goes (look for part 43) underneath the unit. Of course, be sure you unplug the oven first!

Hope this helps!

Turntable not rotating on my microwave

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again. If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes. You can download your owner's manual here: http://www.miele.co.uk/Resources/OperatingInstructions/M%20625%20EG.pdf On the last page it has the contact information for various countries. You can locate servicers or spare parts. The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray. You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPSWi_z7M58 If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler. Coupler has stopped turning

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

But first you should also be sure that the internal cooling fan is working, because in this model, that's where the stirrer and turntable motors get their power - from a tap on the cooling fan motor!

Probably the easiest way to check this is to remove your stirrer cover, place a cup of water on the tray, then microwave for about a minute.

Watch through the glass and see if the metal stirrer is slowly rotating.

If not, the problem may be a bad cooling fan.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed, too.

If you're not sure how to remove your stirrer cover, it's covered in your owner's manual.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Is there an option via the Help or Custom Help to turn the turntable off and off?

This feature is common in over the range models.

Otherwise, it may be a bad motor.
