Question about Elna Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Elna SU 62 won't stop running. I wired a universal foot control to my original power cord but the machine runs unless it is unplugged. Others have asked the same question but I can't find a detailed answer.

Go to yahoo.com and join the Elna Heirloom group there. Several of the members are very knowledgeable and I've read fixes on this issue there.

I did that first, posted my query twice. Got one reply and it was not helpful. There are several old queries on this site but not enough information to resolve it. I have the elna wiring diagram but don't know what to do.

I have read several threads on Yahoo Elna Heirloom on this repair but generally the members are used to pulling apart their old machines so it can be challenging if you haven't done repairs before. You could contact The White Sewing Centre as he stocks many old Elna parts and may well have a second hand genuine foot control for the 62. www.whitesewingcenter.com

Would save trying to rewire the universal controller.

I have an Elna Carina SU model no. 65. The spool pins suddenly stopped rotating when I was refilling the spool, although I could hear a motor running quietly when I pressed the foot control.

I'm just wondering if the machine has been checked, cleaned and oiled by a technician recently. These old mechanical machines usually need regular oiling to keep going. Not sure if that is the problem, but sometimes mechanical machines have parts that lock up over time.

Electronic foot control on My Elna free arm model SU is not getting power to the machine from the electronic foot control. The light comes on, but the control will not provide power to the machine.

take the foot control in to a sewing machine repair shop and have it tested
earlier models were a simple resistance variation but later models are electronic control
it could be a simple broke connection in the control

How do I fix my 1975 Elna SU which is sewing at full speed even though my foot is off the foot control. Had to remove power cord to stop it !

Your foot control is needing to be either repaired or replaced. Here is a good web site for replacements:

How do i fix a n elna su that will not stop after releasing the foot pedal

I'm guessing this is an Elna air electronic SU? If yes, then the problem is with the diagram inside the right side of the machine where your air control foot pedal tube feeds in. I havent' done this repair myself, I took mine to my favourite sewing machine technician. But if you are technically able, try joining the Yahoo Group called Elna Heirlooms, and then go through the threads there, there's been discussion on this repair before.

My foot pedal doesn't work. Sometimes will start if I manually turn wheel.

Bet the friction drive is worn, if this is a 62 air electronic mine did the same. Its like a slipping clutch. Can you check the model number? It will be on the machines id plate on right side near power plug socket. 62 is the SU. You may find some help from fellow Elna owners at the group called,Elna Heirlooms in groups at yahoo dot com, I have seen othets discuss a way to roughen up the outside of the drive wheel with sandpaper.

No foot switch for Elna Su (1972-78?)-can I use the foot petal from an Elna Zigzag that I have?

I'm asuming you have the integrated foot controller and power lead in one, yes these are both Swiss Tavaro made machines and should have the same plug shape so should be interchangeable. Also the bobbins should be identical, seven holes on top and dished. And the feet should be the same too.

My Elna su from 1975 runs now only at top speed even if you dont push the footcontrol Has always been very reliable and I dont whant to get rid of it.

If your foot control is not an air control but electric then the chances are the suppressor has blown in the control, open the control and take out the small suppressor, you can then use the machine you don't need that part

I have star series elna 62 Supermatic, free arm with blue top, auto buttonhole. It winds bobbin slowly only if started by hand turning fly wheel, but makes a clunky noise. Will not stitch or move to...

Sounds like a drive issue with your Star Series, I'd check out yellow pages and phone a few sewing machine guys until you find someone who knows the vintage Elnas and can take a look at it. Or you could join the Yahoo group Elna Heirlooms and ask some of the guys on there who know these machines well. They may give you enough info to at least take it apart and take a look inside yourself.

There are a few web sites selling parts, www. sewingpartsonline.com has parts for this model listed including a motor. http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/elna-star-62-sewing-machine-parts.aspx

This is a great machine, I have one too and love it. I bought mine 2nd hand in 1988 and it still sews beautifully, outlasting my Elna Air Electronic SU. Mine has never been to a serviceman while I've had it, I always keep it in the case and inside a cupboard, and give it a good clean and oil when I pull it out to use. Its straight stitch is beautiful to behold.

Elna supermatic...the light comes on ,,but nothing else works

Turn the machine on, press the foot control down and turn the handwheel backwards. If it sputters, the motor carbon brushes are worn to the springs and need replacing.

Next, while pressing on the foot control, try wiggling the wires around where it enters to machine and where it enters the foot control. There may be a short in the cord. If the short is at the machine, you need a new cord. If it is at the foot control, the cord can be pulled into the foot control, the shorted part cut off and the connection reattached.

If it still doesn't work, try removing the cord from the machine and placing an alligator clip test lead to two of the inlet prongs on plugging it into power. Which two prongs you ask? Try several combinations, (one will light up the lamp) CAREFUL: THE MACHINE MAY SUDDENLY TAKE OFF AT FULL SPEED, SO REMOVE THE BOBBIN, THE THREAD AND NEEDLE FIRST. if it runs, it is your foot control. If it doesn't run, it's likely the motor brushes or motor.

My foot pedal is really hot

Hello,
Based on your description and since your sewing machine is older, the motor inside your machine is probably drawing more current to maintain the same output power and all that current is passing thru the foot operated switch.. What that means is that your motor windings may be breaking down from age and use or the contacts within the footswitch may be getting carbon on them from passing more current than the original design called for and becoming resistive ( which equates to it getting hot). I suggest you discontinue using it until you have it maintenanced to make sure you aren't risking a shock or fire hazard. Sight unseen, it's difficult to draw any other conclusion.
Regards,
Rick
