You can replace the fuel cap.

The cap has a foam breather hanging down on a zip tie.. this acts as a sponge that sucks up gas sloshing around and spews out the open breather in the cap. My solution was to simply tighten the zip tie all the way up, compressing the foam and minimizing the escape route for gas.. it runs fine and does not leak anymore.

Check fuel cap light coming on, replaced twice - still on. ideas?

It sounds like you have a large evap leak. The cap is most likely not the cause. You could have a hole in any numerous evap lines or in the fuel filler neck. Also the canister vent solenoid could be malfunctioning. Your best bet is to have an emissions certified shop test the system with a smoke tester. They need to have a scan tool capable of actuating the canister vent solenoid.

Code 0455 on a 2004 grand prix

P0455 - Evaporative Emission Control (fuel vapor control) System Leak Detected Gross Leak

Possible causes- Missing or loose fuel cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- EVAP canister or fuel tank leaks
- EVAP system hose leaking
- Fuel tank leaking Tech notes The P0455 it's a very common code, because the code is set if the gas cap is loose or missing. Start by tighten the gas cap and clearing the code. In most cases the code can be clear by disconnecting the car battery for about 30 minutes.

My ford explorer sport trac 2001 shows codes 455 and 457, check engine on

P0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system

Possible Solutions:
With a P0455, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary.

P0457 can set by itself if the gas cap is left loose. when the engine controller sees a large increase in fuel level it knows you put some in the tank, and it runs the evaporative emissions system test to see if the system is sealed. If it sees a large leak it knows the cap was left off and sets the P0457. If you are positive the cap wasn't left even a little bit loose you may have a leak back there. It could be in the filler neck, from the tank to the evaporative emissions canisters, and from there on up to the purge solenoid. If you don't see any leaks you probably have a bad NVLD, the unit that checks the system for leaks.

An error code of 0457 came up. any idea what that is?

P0457 FORD - EVAP Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Filler Cap Loose/Off)
EVAP control system has a very large leak such as fuel filler cap fell off, EVAP control system does not operate properly.

Vehicles that meet enhanced evaporative requirements utilize a vacuum-based evaporative system integrity check. The evap system integrity check uses a Fuel Tank Pressure Transducer (FTPT), a Canister Vent Solenoid (CVS) and Fuel Level Input (FLI) along with the Vapor Management Valve (VMV) or Electric Vapor Management Valve (EVMV) to find 0.040" diameter or larger evap system leaks. Federal vehicles can utilize a 0.040" leak check rather than the 0.020" leak check required for California vehicles (click over pic for zoom).

When trying to start check fuel cap displays on odmeter

Your fuel cap is either loose or you have a bad feul cap gasket. When fueling up or after having it fueld up make sure to turn the gas cap so you hear at least 3 clicks. If this doesn't help get a new gas cap.

My 1999 montero sport has a check engine light that reads P0455 , what does that mean?

well LISACOXFLORE this code is to do with the emissions control ,,, (EGR) exhaust gas return or the MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure sensor ) it should be a soft code meaning the it wont prevent the vehicle from driving, normally this is caused when the sensors needs to be changed or based on the type of fuel you use causes the cheak light to come on

Ihave dodge caravan sport 2001 and ihave this code in my car-p0442 how i fixed ?

This code just means the fuel vapors in your vehicle are escaping somewhere. It's the typical "gas cap" code. Check to make sure your gas cap is correctly tightened. Then try getting the code erased (any local shop can do this for you, typically at no charge) and see if it comes back. If it does come back, the other reasons could be a small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube, other small leak in EVAP system, or a faulty vent o-ring seal.

Get back to me, let me know either way, and I will help you continue servicing the problem, assuming it persists!

I hope this helps!

Ihave dodge caravan sport 2001 and ihave this code in my car-p0442 how i fixed ?

This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. .The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
  • A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
  • A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
  • Other small leak in EVAP system
  • Faulty vent o-ring seal

With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Few places to check - rubber hose under air box (requires removing the air box) and hoses connecting to EVAP system under the van on the drivers side.

What does the code p0457 for a 2005 ford sport trac mean?

check for a loose fuel cap or a rust hole at the top of the filler neck. causing a loss of pressure/vacuum.

P0457 - EVAP Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Filler Cap Loose/Off) A fuel tank pressure change greater than a minus (-) 7 inches of H 2 0 in 30 seconds has occurred after refueling; or there is excessive purge (fuel vapor) flow greater than 0.06 pounds per minute.
  • Fuel filler cap not installed on refueling (storing continuous memory DTC) and "check Fuel Cap" light may also be illuminated.
  • Fuel filler cap missing, loose or cross-threaded.
Check for missing fuel filler cap or integrity of the cap. If OK, clear continuous memory DTCs and re-initiate EVAP Emission Running Loss Monitor Drive Cycle.
