Yes there is a way to get rid of the lines you are seeing when scanning from the document feeder.

Let me see if I can explain this in a way that you will understand?

Stand in front of your printer with it facing you. Make sure the document feeder is empty. Put your hand in where the paper would go, and pull upward towards you or to the left. This will open the top of the paper feed tray and expose the rollers that bring in the paper. You can use a brush to seep out the debris. This is not likely where you are getting the lines from though!

Where the lines come from are inside the flat bed area. If you open it, you will see a big piece of glass where the paper is placed to scan a document. to the left, you will see another small piece of glass and this is where the lights flash that scan the picture into the scanner. Try taking a slean lint free cloth and wipe the small glass area and the paded lid above it to get rid of any lines that are appearing on your documents.

Horizontal line on printed page

When you use the flatbed the copy is perfect because the ccd sensor is under the glass cover and obviously is free form dust/ dirt.
On the other hand if you use the feeder the ccd sensor is located in between the roller assembly (not sure exactly for this model).
This means that the page is scanned by the ccd in the feeder, any dirt on the ccd will appear as a black line. I assume that you are feeding papers from the side and not from the top that is why you get a horizontal line.

A quick test to see if the ccd sensor is dirty is to feed the paper from the top side to the feeder. If you get a vertical line it is a proof that your ccd sensor needs to be cleaned.
The worst case is that the sensor in the feeder assembly has a tiny spot that is damaged and it is causing the black line.
So , first try the test, then open the feeder assembly, locate the ccd and clean it. Hope that this helps.

I have a sharp ar-bc 260 have perfect black lines on copies only copy mode print mode is fine

Clean all your glass including the thin strip on the left side that handles scanning for the doc feeder. Run copies both off the glass and the doc feeder. If the line is still there then take off the glass, dust the inside scan cavity and dust your 3 mirrors with a new, lint free rag. Make sure your glass is completely clean before you put it back on.

When copying we are getting 2 lines down one side of the copies

Only when copying? What about printing? There are a couple possible causes. The easy one to check for is to make a copy by laying your original on the glass. Now make the same copy using the automatic feeder on top. If the feeder copy has the lines but the glass copy does not then the problem is coming from the ADF scanner glass which is the thin strip of glass that is just to the right of the large main glass. If so then just clean the strip of glass with a soft cloth and some glass cleaner. Note that sometimes the stuff that might be stuck to the glass is hard to get off. If BOTH the ADF copy and the main glass copy have the lines then most likely the lines are coming from the drum unit. If you have the copier hooked up for use as a PC printer then does the print from the computer have the lines as well? Then it most definately is coming from the drum unit and you would need to replace it. If the PC prints are clean then the drum is not the cause.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Black line on document when I scan from platen or ADF or scan to save as PDF.

As a tech I've never seen that happen. from the doc feeder only Yes, not both the feeder and the glass but not show up when you print from the computer ?????????

For sure there is a dot or something on the small strip of glass, only when you do it from the feeder.
the reason is that the document is moving and the dot on the "small" strip of glass now looks like a line to the copier.

You said it also does it when you lay it down on the glass !!??(platen) that should of indicated the drum has a ring around it, but since it doesn't come out on the PC copy then the glass must have a line on it.

HP Laser Jet 2840 Printer

If it's scan and copy only and not when you send a job from the computer your solution is easy to remedy. Try going into the menu located on the printer to info menu. Scroll down to conguration page and click the check button. When the printer prints, if the line is not on the page you simply have ink or white-out on the scan glass for the ADF (auto doc feeder).

To clean the ADF glass, lift the top lid to expose the glass. There are two peices, 1 large full size and one strip peice. If your getting the line when using the auto feeder (without lifting top) pay close attention to the strip of glass. When a document is auto-fed it moves the original past the strip of glass. A dot (pen mark or white-out) will appear as a line on your final copy.

Clean well with windex or similar glass cleaner. PUT THE CLEANER ON THE RAG THEN THE RAG TO THE GLASS. Don't spray the glass as it's easy to get it into cracks where to don't want it to fall on an electronic part or board below the glass edges. While you at it, clean all the glass.

Test by making a copy of a "BLANK" sheet of paper with one small line to give you postion clues. First by putting it on the glass. Clean everywhere on the large glass that shows a mark on the page (except the one you purposely put there). The mark will help you locate where to clean. (example - 1" below and 2" over from your intentional mark) It also helps you identify top of page from bottom.

Once that is done do the same thing using the original in the ADF. Simply measure in from the edge of the page on the copy and find the corresponding spot on the small strip of glass.

IF YOU SHOULD BE GETTING THE LINE IN ALL FUNCTIONS, PRINT, COPY MANUALLY, AND COPY WITH ADF. Check the toner cartridge, most likely black for damage on the cartidge drum. The cartridge drum can be quickly viewed by flipping the shutter open (the part with the HP logo and part number printed on it). If there is a line, replace the cartridge.

Hope that helps you. If so hit it with a FIXYA!

Thanks,

Copying with page feed results in a vertical line on every page

There must be a strip of glass about one inch wide, next to
the large glass. There is the problem !
Clean that strip thourougly. When you use the feeder the pages
are scanned thru the small strip of glass.

Print Problem - vertical lines

If the problem only occurs when using the document feeder, the problem is not usually caused by the drum. When using the document feeder, try to notice where the scanner (the light assembly under your scan glass)stops just before the paper is being fed. Some multifunction machines have a small piece of glass that is separate from the large scan glass and the scanner assembly stays parked underneith it as the original is being fed over it. Most likely there is something on the glass where the scanner parks as originals are being fed thru the feeder. When putting your original on the large scan glass to copy, the mark on the glass will only show as a spot, but will show as a vertical line thru the whole copy when using the feeder.
