Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

I have a Garmin nuvi 660 that has a non-responsive touch screen. I have held the power button until it brought me to the touch calibration screen. Once there I see the two lines which meet in the lower left hand side of the screen and meet to form a dot. I have pressed the dot with my finger and with a "stylus" pen and neither method has made the screen change or acknowledge that it has been touched. Any help would be appreciated.

Has it occured that your touchscreen itself is malfunctioning

you can buy a new one from herehttp://tinyurl.com/6bghy9g they are quite easy to replace only requiring the cable to be soldered back on to the unit.

this is a quote from a poster to a forum i frequent

I have just come across of a rather curious problem in a Nuvi 660 and a Nuvi 680 that landed into my lap with perfectly intact yet completely unresponsive touchscreens. A quick swap of good LCD/touchscreen packs into the said Nuvis proved that the problem was indeed in the touchscreens themselves.

Upon a closer examination I realised that both units had some goofy aftermarket touchscreens installed. Although the pinout to all four conductive bars followed that of the OEM Nuvi touchscreens, the tracks themselves were cracked at the point where the Mylar ribbon cable met the glass plate. Of course this was hidden from the naked eye, but was quite visible under the Nikon microscope of my resoldering station. IMO these cracks represent nothing else but a flawed manufacturing process.

Some of you might want to make a note of the tell tale signs of those sub par aftermarket screens for future reference.
    1. Unlike the black tracks of the OEM Garmin touchscreens the conductive tracks in the Mylar flex cable of these aftermarket digitisers are bright gold.
    2. Unlike the stamped on the Mylar ribbon part number "XA302A01" of the OEM Garmin touchscreens the flex cables of these aftermarket digitisers are devoid of any markings. However there is an inscription "002 STR-G50A AD3" in the left bottom corner of the glass plate itself.

So it is worth replacing the touchscreen to at least see if it is the problem, which in my opinion it is

Before replacing the display, check that the ribbon cables connecting the display to the motherboard are connected securely.

Screen on my Garmin Nuvi 650 is frozen (no reaction to touch). Cna move through screens via the on/off button. Haven't updated maps...ever. Seems like most repairs will cost me $25 just in shipping. ...

The problem with the gps device is a minor one. First you ensure it is properly charged, then you reset it by holding down the power button for about 15 seconds, then it will restart and you will be able to touch the screen once again. If that does not work, then you need to calibrate the screen, take note that calibrating the screen does not just work the moment you try it, you need to try it repeatedly till you get it right. This is how to calibrate your nuvi:
  1. Turn off your nuvi,
  2. Press your finger on the upper left corner of the touch screen,
  3. While holding your finger on the touch screen for about 30 seconds until the calibration screen comes appears (white screen with touch dot),
  4. Follow the on screen instructions.
It is an easy fix. The solution above will help you out on that. Another solution is for you to remove the battery and fix it in back. That should also help.
