Question about Cub Cadet Street Sign- tractor lawn riding mower parts

Open Question

GT2542 mower (pre-2008 model). Steering very difficult. Attempted to lube at two points-one near the pinion and one below the battery. The pinion did well, but the other grease fitting stripped off when attempting to grease the segment gear assembly. I couldn't get any grease into it when it was attached. The assembly doesn't move by hand. I removed the c-pin in an attempt to separate the assembly from the cast iron plate which has 4 bolts securing it to the frame. I have tried to gently tap the spindle from the top and gently pry from the bottom. It won't budge. Used penetrating oil. I removed the 4 bolts from the iron plate to try and separate, only to break one (used penetrating oil here too). How can I get this thing off?

The mower was purchased in the Summer of 2007 and exhibited the same problem as yours (started briefly and then died) in late 2008 and was then abandoned in the weather until it was given to me.

The heat shield tends to vibrate in resonance with the engine vibration; this vibration eroded the gasket between the heat shield and the carburetor mounting flange to allow ambient air to enter into the gas/air flow into the intake side of the engine. This extra air “leaned-out” the gas/air mixture causing the engine to die.

The machine now starts on the first pull and runs well.

Pontiac G5. Steering wheel spins freely, wheels don't turn. Is this a U joint issue?

either the steering shaft has broke or the rack and pinion is broke have someone turn the wheel and look under hood near where the steering shaft meets the rack and pinion. do you see it spinning? if so the rack is most likely broke inside. if not the steering shaft may have snapped. hope this helps

Sounds like the sterring wheel is striped

Sorry I don't have a solution but have a similar problem. I replaced the steering pinion gear in hopes that would resolve the problem, but it didn't. The steering pinion gear is located at the bottom of the steering shaft and turns the steering gear. Looks like the steering gear needs to be replaced as well. The nuts securing the steering gear are accessible in the same area as the pinion steering gear. I am going to order a replacement steering gear and attempt to replace it.

Steering Problem

Only lube points you might have are on the ball joints and outer tie rod ends. Many come "sealed" and have no provision for service, others will have zirk fittings or a small nut in them that needs to be removed and replaced with a fitting. Your power steering should also be checked to make sure that it's operating properly.
