Remove the memory card from the camera, look along the one edge for a tiny switch, slide it towards the contacts to unlock the card. The switch that is furthest from the contacts is in the lock position to avoid erasing the pictures, now! if the card is already in the unlock position slide it back and forth to reset, if that fails! the card should be replaced.

Hello

Thank you for using Fixya!!!

Before you try anything, try using another card. If the problem persists, try the suggestions below.

OK, if the memory card itself is locked, you might sometimes get this error code. All you need to do is to take out the memory card and switch the lever on the left side to the unlock.

My camera says CARD LOCKED. - 6c99e31.jpg

If the error is still displayed after you did the above, you might want to try the card in another camera.

If the card works in another camera . the problem is with your card reader in your camera.

If you open you sd slot and look inside with a sharp light , you should be able to see on the left side of the slot there is a little copper or spring steel lever switch. This switch work as follows:

1. When no card is inserted / no write protection , the switch is open and thus the protection is off.
2. When locked card is inserted , the tab is depressed and tells the camera that the card is lock.

Contrary to popular belief ,the little tab on the sd card is not an electronic switch and does not physically influence the card operation itself. If you put a locked card into a camera without a sd lock switch , you would still be able to use the card normally.

It is incredible difficult to fix this switch because of space limitations in the sd card. Look into the sd slot and if you can see the switch , use a needle to pull the little tab down toward the base of the camera by about 2mm or until it works being careful not to bend it.

If this does not resolve your problem , there might be a short in the switch circuit and the camera will need to be disassembled to resolve this error. This should cost no more than $50.

Please feel free to contact me if you need further information

Kind regards
Andrea

If your card is lock, I assume it's an SD card. The card itself has a slide lock that you can push forward/backward to lock the card from being written to.

My camera wont take pix says slide lock to write position, when I do that it display "CHA" don't know what that means and still can't take pix

CHA also means the card cannot be used for other reasons. F.i. the card can be damaged. Try to format the card. That is, when you could use the card before. If you bought a new card, Make sure it is not a SDXC card, because your camera only allows MMC, SD and SDHC cards. If nothing helps, also look in the memory card holder, if nothing strange is in there, or the sensor that looks for the lock, is functioning correct. If you don't know how, please visit or contact a Nikon-Authorised service centre.

Error formatting memory card

For compatibility of the Sony memory stick (Duo), check the manual. Sony is the only brand that is making memory cards, witch are not all compatible with their own cameras. Then check if the card is not locked, not damaged, and if all contacts are clean and shiny. Also check in the camera if nothing (dust or debris) is in the memory card holder. Make sure you did not put protected files on the card, although the camera should not look for the last one, when you try to format a memory card in there.

My camera shows" card locked! " how I unlock?

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
