Question about Cyberhome CH-DVD 300 DVD Player

1 Answer

I have two CH-DVD 300s. They are a few years old. The one most often used started randomly not reading DVD discs...some would load and run fine...others would say "loading" forever...only to result in a "bad disc" message. I would try a different DVD player and the movie would play fine...I would try a differrent move in my CH-CVD 300 and it would play fine! Now that player won't turn stays in standby mode and the other same model player is giving me the long term "loading" message resulting in the bad disc error! Frustrating!

the second player (in permanent standby mode) was doing the same thing as the first player. I opened top and cleaned what I believe to be the optical lens. (small round glass "eye" that appears to be on a "slider" that would slide it under the disc uring operation.) I after done, the results were the same. would there be any settings that could need to be changed for certain movies to be able to be read?

I left the top off and watched it operate. The optical lens did not slide in or out at all, though it appears to me that it is supposed to. What normally initiates movement of the lens?

  • rk21944 Mar 22, 2011

Interesting. If the eye does not move (reset) upon insertion of disc then it sounds like that would be a problem also..And this one doesn't move. It remains in one position. i can see the red light through the disc. If the optical lens isn't positioned properly, it wouldn't be able to focus to read the disc, right?

I can slide it manually, but it doesn't slide during operation. So does that mean the problem is the sled motor? Or, is there a need for any lubrication of the "rod" that the slider is on?

Unfortunately, though the problems(s) may have been identified - I was not able to fix my machine. But thank you for your prompt insightful responses.

Please clean optical lens of player-1 that gives bad-disc error randomly, please use dry q-tip/ cotton bud to clean optical lens and need to take off top cover to access the lens, if you are handy with electronics stuff repair then should attempt that.
Player-2 remains in standby mode due to either power supply board or signal processor chip problem so I would suggest to transfer/ install its dvd mechanism in working dvd player-1 if lens cleaning does not fix the problem and you will get a working dvd player.
Hope this will help.

Yes, that is optical lens and if cleaning didn't improved then I'm afraid optical lens is weak in performance and nothing can be done to improve it except optical lens replacement that is not feasible because new dvd player would be available in that price.
It is not any firmware issue nor any wrong settings problem, optical lens is just dying.

On power up, lens moves towards spindle motor (where disc spins) to get reset the sled mechanism then optical laser will emit (high red light) and lens try to focus by moving up and down for few times, if disc is there, spindle motor will start spinning and lens will start reading data on disc.
If no disc on spindle motor, lens will stop focusing and unit will show No Disc.
This is the sequence in brief, how dvd player works.

Correct, lens will start reading data located inward and moves outward to keep reading. Now if lens block does not move then it is problem of sled motor or related drive circuit. Sled motor moves lens block left to right etc, please check sled motor may be stuck for some reason.

It sounds problem is in electronics circuit that drives/ provides volts to sled motor. It calls Servo Section.
Schematics of player is required to sort out bad parts to get them replaced.

Cds fine; dvds won't load

Most likely the DVD laser lens is dirty. Unplug the CH-DVD 300 from the wall outlet, wait 5 minutes, then remove the top cover. Next, remove the rectangular metal plate which covers the area where the CD or DVD disc would be when in the player's tray. Underneath the rectangular plate you should see two small lenses. Gently clean these lenses using ear swabs moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Reassemble the CH-DVD 300 in the reverse order that you disassembled it, plug it back into power, and now it should read your DVD discs just fine.
