Question about Cobra 29 LTD CB Radio

1 Answer

I just purchased a Cobra 29 LTD Classic CB radio with a Wilson Little Wil antenna. Do you know of a place in Nashville, TN where I can get my antenna tuned to maximize performance?

The Wilson should be factory tuned already to 1.1 to 2.1 Swr. Its just a mobile not much help can it get. Buy a Radio Shack SWR meter for $20 + a 6" inch jumper cable to test it. I find most antennas, Magnet mount are already set to good 1.5 Swr reads.

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

Whats the best antenna and location on an f250 ford p/u ext cab superduty

Something like either a Wilson 1000 or 5000 magnetic mount on the roof--coil and whip unit detach as needed.

Calibrate LTD 29Cobra classic

The misconception is that you can calibrate a radio. You do not calibrate the radio. You tune the antenna. The calibrate knob on the radio is to calibrate the meter in it so you can check the SWR.

This article will tell you everything you need to know.

Calibration problem

Changing the length of the mast more then likely made your antenna to short, and therefore impossible to tune.

Start with the antenna that you have hooked to it, is it grounded, is the coax in good shape, is the connector in good shape. stuff like that.

As I understand from a tech friend of mine, most truck beds are not grounded well enough. Perhaps you could borrow/purchase a magnet mount antenna and locate it on the roof, for testing. Then you would have it narrowed down to the location.
