Goodman Heat Pump GSH 130601 5 ton unit - Compressor seized

I replaced my heat pump with a Goodman GSH 130601 inside and outside unit in May 2007. In July 2008 my compressor quit running. Serviceman said compressor was seized or locked and would have to replace. Next day they put a hard start unit on the compressor and it ran. Serviceman said he talked to Goodman and they told him they were having problems with their 5 ton compressors locking up. I was told by a friend, he is a refrigeration tech, the hard start unit is just a band-aid fix. He said I will likely have more compressor problems. I have a 10 year parts and compressor warranty from Goodman but with a $200.00+ service charges I don't want additional problems. Is the hard start unit just a quick fix and could I have more problems with a compressor that has already locked-up? My compressor always made a loud start-up noise from the day it was installed. Now the compressor is making a swishing sound, not from fan, and is even louder on start-up.

First and foremost ignore 90% of what anonymous posted. Goodman merged with Amana and make a very solid/quiet unit. The fact that the compressor was faulty is the fault of Copeland who made the compressor. New units do not require a hardstart, that is a bandaid to get more life out of an old compressor. The compressor should be replaced.

Goodman makes the cheapest unit on the market bar none. they are the absolute lowest end of the scale when buying a system. they are for that reason the best selling unit in the industry. so you should expect loud and clunky performance. expect only that they will perform, but dont even begin to expect them to perform quietly or smoothly. your warranty is only a year on these cheap pieces of equipment compared to a 5 or 10 year parts and labor warranty on trane and am standard equipment,so the labor will eat you alive on the cheap stuff. and when the expensive parts fail they will be really expensive.all compressors are now manufactured by about three compressor manufacturers, copeland tecumseh and bristol. so what ever brand you buy will have possibly the same compressor in it. all ac s in recent years have expansion valves that require a hard start kit. many cheap sluggo installers will not add the required hs kit even though they know it is needed and required by the manufacturer. so if the txv ( thermostatic expansion valve ) is a non pressure equalizing valve it has trouble starting against unequal pressure and voila , the compressor wont start. i have seen many a dumb+++ add a start kit to boost starting torque when the oem run capacitor is in fact weak or bad . if run cap is weak (test it) the start cap will temp fix. but you have not really fixed the problem if the run cap is bad eventually it will fail then no start again etc. despite the fact its a year old heres what you need to do. check filter for cleanliness. vacuum out drain for clean and clear drainage, run unit 15 minutes on a warm day , check run caps on fan outside and on compressor outside . they should be within 10 percent of rated mf values printed on side.feel suction line, cold? ok. not cold? call a pro for under charged or inefficient compressor. if cold then look at contactor points. they should be clean and golden colored. no char ,no gray or dark areas. a pro can tell with gages if charge is low or compressor is weak. as high pressure falls off and gets low ,suction pressure gets weak and rises. this would be a weak or bad compressor. as head ( high) pressure falls and suction pressure also falls this would be a case of low ref charge. you as a home owner can stick a cheap thermometor in the incoming and outgoing duct and expect to see a difference of 20 degrees . less equals low charge, or weak compressor,

Tell them you want a whole new outside system or a new compressor . Around here, the compressor change out should be around 5--$800.00 and the unit change out , around $400.00! OKLAHOMA.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

Ac unit keeps freezing up

what a heat pump is designed to do is reverse the evaporator inside coil and condensor outside coil. it trys to pick up heat from outside and transfer it inside. they work fairly well down to about 40 degrees ambient then not so good. that is why you have auxillary heat i.e. 15 kw. when it was shaking as you saw the compressor is trying to pump liquid instad of vapor as it's designed to. you either have a control issue or it's overcharged.

Will goodman outdoor ac work with bryant indoor unit

This is true as long as it is not a heat pump. Make sure they replace the piston (metering device to match the outdoor units required piston size. Or if the indoor coil is metered via TXV, it will automatically meter the refrigerant flow. If you are mismatching a system, make sure an acid test is performed on the old refrigerant and take appropriate measures with the new system if the test shows positive acid. They need to definitely install a liquid line drier.

I have a Rheem heat pump/air handler; it draws 2.9amps with only the fan running, 13amps when the heat pump is running and 38amps with the heat strips on. My question is why the unit draws that many amps...

Sounds like it must be about a 2.5- 3 ton system. The 13amps has to be the compressor draw -normal. and 38 on the strips- normal. 2.9 fan -normal.

You may want to check your wiring to see where the outside unit gets its power. Theres nothing inside that can draw 13 amps. That almost has to be the compressor power wire.

Its 28 degrees out side and my goodman 3.5 ton heat pump package unit is blowing cold air out of all my regesters

Sounds like the heat pump is not running. Check outside to see if the fan is spinning.

Try moving the thermostat to emergency heat and see if that gives you any heat. If it does, then you have heat until you can get a service technician to locate the problem with the heat pump. It could be a wide range if issues from bad thermostat to bad wiring to bad capacitor.

Fan not running on Heat Pum

That does not sound normal at all, I have a Goodman Heatpump and the Fan on the Evaporator (outside unit) should run as soon as it starts up!
The only delay you should be seeing is when the unit starts, the fan in the AHU starts 5 seconds after and runs for about 1.5 minutes after shutdown.

Goodman heat pump 5 ton power problem

Sound like the outside unit is going to ground or the unit is over amping. Take and shut off the power to the unit and check all of the electrical connection for tightness. Don't forget to check the disconnect wires too since you shut it off at the breaker box. If you have a meter check to see if it''s live before you work on it. If it's all tight then call back the person that did the previous repair and tell them that he obviously missed something and the you feel that it should be a warranty call.
