Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have bought a Sony BDP-S380 Blu-Ray Disc Player. I have read the scanty instructions for hooking it up to my home entertainment system but still am unclear how to do it, which connection jacks to use and what kind of cables I should use. I would like someone to help walk me through the installation process, starting with helping me decide whether I need to purchase separate cables.

Without knowing what your Home Entertainment System or TV capabilities are...

Page 10 of the not-so-scanty instructions lists the various video hook-ups to your TV in descending order or quality...

Here's how I would do it.

HDMI from the BD to the TV.
Digital audio (standard RCA cable) from the BD to the 'system'.

The best video goes to the TV without hops and extra expensive cable. The best audio goes to the sound system on the cheapest cable which can also be spliced for added length.

I never run either audio or video anywhere it isn't needed or enhanced.

Many thanks Dunnbiker. I actually had read the instructions but was too technically challenged to figure them out, but I believe I have now with your help. Can you answer one more question?: When you say connect the digital audio cable to the "system," do you mean connect the left and right RCA cables to the AV receiver, as in drawing "C" on P. 11 of the BD instruction manual? (Btw, I have a Yamaha AV receiver model RX-V2500, Pioneer Elite display model PRO-930HD, and Pioneer Elite media receiver model PRO-RO6U.) Thanks in advance.

Hmm, two AV control centers. I'm jealous.

The Media Center gives you a single point of connection and control for a number of inputs, as does the Yamaha.

Video Inputs should go to the Pro-RO6U as it is the actual interface between the TV and the world.

Example C is the lowest fidelity sound you could have. You don't want that. Left and Right RCA are analog standard audio, NOT digital or multichannel.

I recommend keeping the best audio for the Yamaha and the best video for the Pioneer Media Center. To expand on my preferred separation of audio and video duties, nothing improves when it has to go through unnecessary connectors, added cable length or digital-to-analog-digital conversions. Keeping the source digital up to the point of consumption (by the eye or the ear) serves it best.

Something to think about. Component Video and HDMI video are the same quality but Component Video is analog (having been converted once from the digital source) so if it enters the Media Center and must be converted internally for transmission to the TV there may be some anomalies introduced.

Your BD audio can be carried with the video on HDMI or through dedicated coaxial digital cable to one of the 3 available coaxial inputs the Yamaha (my original recommendation).

That applies to EVERY source you have. Think: Cable.

Sony BDP-S300 keeps skipping Blu-ray discs and then say's can't read disc.

The most common problem with blu-ray discs in blu-ray players like the BDP-S300 seems to be related to firmware issues. You can download the latest firmware from the Sony website here. Once burned to a disc on your computer you load the disc into the blu-ray player to update it.

I hope that helps.

I am not sure about the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player: But the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player requires HDMI cable

to support. Hope this helps.
