Hello

Thank you for using FIXYA!!!

This is a suggestion. If you do not feel comfortable trying it, you will need to take the unit to your nearest service centre. Feel free to let me know if you need any assistance.

The problem might be that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair centre for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance. Also, please be so kind to let me know if you found this helpful.

Regards
Andrea

SOURCE: Lens Errors

To all new users posting on this thread:

When the lens will not retract and camera is not functional (no picture on display, and does not shoot) , and you already tried replacing batteries with a new fresh set (ensure please) , and then restarting camera with no memory card inside, then camera is faulty.

Try an easy fix by pushing gently the lens (do not force them, just help them) while you turn off camera at same time. Try also switching the mode selector.

If still no luck , then the camera must be disassembled to fix the problem.

Possible reasons are :

  • Faulty lens mechanism or jammed lens (camera usually turns off by itself in this case)
  • Main board faulty.
  • Ribbon cable to main board broken or connector defective.
  • If there is no power at all it is the connector from batteries to main board, this is also a ribbon cable.

If the camera is less than one year old will be replaced by manufacturer.

If your warranty is expired you can get an estimate for repair from manufacturer, or from a third party like Advance Camera here :Advance Camera Repair you can book the repair online.

Hi, if i make on my camera. I get the message " lens error restart camera " What should i do? Thanks, Shahram.

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya, Getting message of "Lens error" occur if you hold the lens while it is in motion or when using it in a location with excessive dust or sand in the air. I have here some troubleshooting for you to fix this kind of error.

1. You have to check first, if the battery slot and memory slot is not lifted or open while camera is turn on or while recording.
2. Try to clean the lens with soft and dry cloth.
2. You also need to be careful not to block the camera lens when turning on. Lens will have issues while retracting if your hands or even small thing that will block the lens to retrack while in motion of turning on.

I also check a website for those camera that was already out of warranty and looking forward to fix their camera without spending. If you want you can try to check this link. However according to this link, this is not a 100% sure for your camera to be fixed. This troubleshooting steps is just an option if you don't want to spend too much for fixing your camera.

I highly suggest that If this error continues to appear, contact your camera's service center as there may be a problem with the lens where the are the only one who can open the camera and fix it. Don't take a risk in opening your camera because this might end up for much more damaged on your camera.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

My name is Madhu. I use the camera Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi. When the inbuilt FLASH is on then a message pop up as "busy now", when i tried to click the camera to take a photo then...

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thank you

I have a Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS, it keeps giving me the "error lens, restart camera" error message. How do you suggest this can be resolved?

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

I get a "lens error"

This can be caused by a physical problem within the lens itself. If restarting the camera does not fix the problem, it will need to be taken in for repair. Unfortunately, the repair on most consumer digital cameras such as this one will likely exceed the value of the camera itself (i.e. it might make more sense to purchase a new one than to fix this one.)
My suggestion would be to take it to a nearby camera shop to see if they can analyze the problem-- there's not much you can do yourself in this situation.

Ouch!--I dropped my Nikon CoolpixS10 and the mesaage is "Lens error." What do you recommend I do. Catherine

Unfortunately Catherine if you are getting a lens error after a fall it means that the lens may have been knocked out of alignment on the guides that keep the housing on track so it moves back and forth smoothly, or the motor gears may be damaged or there is a motor issue. I recommend a camera shop take a quick look at it before you commit to having it repaired, that way you can decide the best course of action.

Coolpix s220.stating "lens error"?

You camera might be in it's last leg. These camera has only so many thousands of exposures and then they worn out. If you are a photo bug I would suggest that you upgrade and get a camera with a higher rating in how many frames it can actually capture. You lens motor is worn out and once that happens it is time to say good-bye. Sorry about the bad news but that is reality. Good Luck
