SOURCE: my washer does not spin or agitate but does everything else

It is definitely not worth repairing for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that the new washers use much less electricity and water. Therefore, they pay for themselves relatively quickly. The second reason is that you have more than one costly problem when your machine won't spin or agitate.

SOURCE: washer won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for washer model # 110.22952100 which I believe is your model.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.22952100+

Look at the section containing the agitator and you should see how the parts fit.

Also see the following for an illustrated description of replacing the "dogs"

MY KENMORE WASHING MACHINE IS NOT SPINNING. THOUGHT IT WAS THE BELT AND CALLED THE REPAIRMAN AND HE SAYS THAT IT DOESN'T HAVE A BELT ON IT. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF MODEL #110.91110100 HAS A BELT?

Hello, Yes, the repair tech is correct. This model washer does NOT have a drive belt. It uses a gearbox driven directly by the electric motor. It is likely that the gearbox has a stripped gear or a broken drive wheel.

I've attached a link to the Sears parts web site so you can look at all the line drawings and parts diagrams for your washer model. You can click on each link to see the various components and also get a replacement parts list, which shows the prices (if you buy them thru Sear's site) to give you a better idea of the anticipated cost to replace the gearbox, etc.

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.91110100&=part+number

Just click on the link titled, "BRAKE, CLUTCH, GEARCASE, MOTOR AND PUMP " to get a good look at the parts that make the washer agitate and spin.

You might want to take a closer look to see if it a gearbox issue or maybe a motor drive shaft problem where the keyway has sheared off and is causing the washer not to spin. If, however, the washer agitates during the wash cycle, the problem is NOT a stripped keyway on the motor shaft, but rather is within the gearbox and you'll have to either repair or replace the gearbox to get the washer working properly again.

The decision to undertake the repairs or purchase a new washer is yours to make, but I can offer the following to help you decide. If the parts (and labor costs, if you don't do the repair yourself) exceeds 60% of the cost of a new, comparable machine AND the machine is over 8-10 years old, AND you've got rust starting to appear inside the wash tub, etc. you might wish to seriously consider replacing your washer with a new one. Otherwise, go ahead and make the repairs and keep it working for (hopefully) many more years to come.
I hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

I have an average top load washer that is 11 years old. The tall agitator in the middle isn't agitating. Thank you.

Assuming that this is the basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain two piece agitator model.

There is a Sears repair parts site:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and a list of major sub-components will come up.

Since it isn't agitating (I assume not at all rather than just the top part of the agitator. If just the top part

isn't turning then the easiest solution is replacing the 4 "agitator dogs" ) the solution points to a

couple of places.

1. The motor coupler

#13 on diagram Coupling, motor and isolation Number:3364003Substitution:285753A $18.50 In stock
may be broken. This piece is a fail safe between the motor and transmission. and basically transmits power to the transmission.

If it spins and drains OK, and if you can hear the motor turning, the problem points to the transmission.

Inside the transmission are a number of gears, springs, and plastic cams and levers. Over time one of

them may have either broken or worn out.

There is a Whirlpool site with a parts list for their "commercial washer" which is essentially the same as

for your washer. On it is a list of all of the components and parts for the washer.

By paging down to and following the diagram of the transmission you should be able to determine

which actual part is broken.

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

When our washer (12 years old) wouldn't spin, rather than spending $170 for a new transmission, we

installed a repair kit into the old one ($15) and the problem was solved.

USED WASHING MACHINE DOES

Go to a local store and buy a new belt. They are can be hard to replace but the salesman/woman should be able to tell you what to do. You have to take the drum out and put it back in. Just remember when taking something apart like that you HAVE TO put it back in the same way you took it out.

Previous post on a Kenmore washer

How old is the washer ?

Here is an interesting report I just read!!!!!!!!!!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old washer

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your washer,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your washer is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that washers under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your washer is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new washer.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive washer
eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of washers you replace are likely to end up in a landfill.

WHAT IS THE LOAD CAPCITY SIZE OF WASHER MODEL 110.20702990

On newer, and sometimes a little newer, Whirlpool and Kenmore (Kenmore is made by Whirlpool) considers a few things in determing capacity. Most of the inner baskets are the same size, but they also add in agitator action into the mix. A Kenmore with an auger top agitator would have higher capacity than a Kenmore with just a normal agitator, even though it has the same sized drum. So a super capacity washer would have theoretically less CLEANING CAPACITY than a super capacity plus. The agitator action is actually what determines capacity on these models. So, with that in mind, cubic load should be about the same on both units. Sorry that I had to go into "Bill Nye The Washer Guy" mode, but thats about the only way to describe. Let me know if I can confuse you any more haha. Seriously though, if you need further help or info, write back, and will try to get you some other information. Remember, this theory only works on top load "normal people" washers, not the front loaders.
