Question about Washing Machines

Speed Queen SC18 Washer-Extractor, (clothes washing machine) Machine no longer reverses direction during wash cycle, is intermittent on spin, and sometimes does not fully pump out water during extract cycle, (no clogs). I suspect contacts on dual clock motor cycling timer...? Any suggestions? Thanks, Daniel

This is a converted commercial washing maching, - FRONT LOADER, no lid switch, and door interlock has long been disconnected.

I think the problem lies in the timer mechanism,-dual clock motors, lots of contacts switched by rotating cams. All manual, no computer, lots of relays and contactors to energize the washer motor and water pump.

I am not sure your experts have read the previously posted problem description. The drain hose has nothing to do with the cycling problem, - no leaks and it is open, the pump works properly when being switch on by the timer and relays.

I cleaned the contacts on the timer with contact cleaner, - the washing cycle does not turn on the agitation cycle, but does go into spin cycle at the end as it should.

Is the timer alone responsible for the wash cycle forward and reverse of the drum as well as the spin cycle, or are there other components in play. the Heavy duty contactors that actually switch the motor on and off are working, but in wash cycle, it is not starting the motor as needed. I looked at the contacts, they look OK, and the contactor is working at the appropriate time.

What function does the small PC board on the back wall of the machine do? There is a small relay on it, as well as an IC and other electronic commponents. Any way to test it?

Again, this is a converted commercial speed queen washer extractor, SC18 model.

I would like to get a little more informed replies to my questions this time.

It's a timer problem. The metal contacts might be dirty so you need to clean it manually. Check the timer wires or some wiring if they are still in good contacts. Re-soldering or changing wires might fix it.

We have an Ultima washing machine and creases the cloths very badly any suggestions please

The amount of creasing you will get is directly related to the speed you select for the final spin dry cycle and the spin after the first wash cycle which occurs prior to the rinse cycle. The higher the speed and the longer it goes for the more the clothes will crease.

Experiment with different spin speeds on your machine for clothing that is subject to the creasing problem. Also do not put too many items in the machine for a wash as many people do as this will contribute to creasing. Always under load your machine for every wash cycle.

Spin drying is a compromise between creasing and maximum water removal. If you want less creasing you will need to select a more gentle spin dry speed but you will also have the clothes coming out of the machine with a higher water content and they will take a bit longer to dry. The spin time on the program may also be shorter.

In my own machines I use a gentle wash and spin cycle for all clothing that I don't want heavily creased. Running it on a wash cycle with a high and longer spin speed when the machine is spinning the clothes after the initial wash, and then again after the final rinse, will thoroughly crease the clothes every time.

Also bear in mind that different fabrics that are suitable for machine washing will perform differently and some are just too subject to creasing even if you use the most gentle wash, rinse and spin cycle. Hence you can take 2 different 100% cotton fabrics out of a machine and hang them to dry and one will be almost crease free and the other will be thoroughly creased. With these fabrics that are just very subject to wash creasing, it is better to hand wash and rinse them. Then after rinsing drip dry them or put them in the machine and spin them for 1 -2 minutes maximum just to get some of the water out and hang dry them.

I have a 2 month old Speed Queen top load (542) after the spin cycle, the clothes are still very wet

i assume the majority of the water is being pumped from the machine? if the clothes are very wet check your "fabric Select" setting and ensure you are not wahing on delecate handwash or wool wash (knits) setting, in this setting there will be a very slow or no, spin so the clothes will not stretch and have to be laid out to dry this is normal. if you are on a Permpress or regular setting the spin should be faster, also check your cycle selection is for Regular or permpress and spin is not missed .

I hope this was useful

My Speed Queen washer shakes and walks during the spin cycle. I have leveled the machine and ajusted the amount of clothes in subsequent loads and it still shakes. How do I solve this? Thank you!

Did you remove the shipping bolts from the back of the washer? They are located on the back, usually very clearly marked "REMOVE" and have a red or yellow plastic washer/bushing. This is a fairly common problem with front load washers, from what I understand.

They're big suckers, and they keep the drum suspension from absorbing any vibration (so the drum doesn't slam around during shipping). Good luck!

Speed queen top load washer does not agitate properly

you need to see if the motor turns one direction during wash and the other during the spin. If so, your gearbox is faulty and needs replacement. If motor only goes in one direction at all times, then very possible, the timer is faulty.
