Question about Kenmore Dryers

1 Answer

Kenmore DWSR-ele-2406028 CV54 Model 110.62802101 Dryer won't work at all. History: Dryer works fine. Moved Dryer from one house to the other, switched from 3-wire to 4-wire plug. 220V Electric. No problems. A few weeks later "Dryer not working at all". I show up and fiddle with the timer and it starts working. When Moving I cleaned lint out of exhaust and under (and got $20 in coins). Although the unit was working I wanted to find the Cause. The 4" dryer vent went strait up in the wall into attic. I disassembled the vent (3") and found the flap on roof vent seriously clogged with lint. I cleaned out as much as possible and left it. Today I get a call that it has stopped working again. My theory is that the restricted pipe diameter and blocked exhaust flap caused poor air circulation. The element kept overheating and turning the heat off/on which caused increased drying time. So to solve the problem, replace the Vent pipe with 4", but why is it not coming on? Door switch seems like a coincidence. Would the timer have suffered from overheat? Would the Overheat switch cause the timer not to function?

No, I am getting ready to go back to the house. I don't know if there will be a diagram in the unit. Thermal Fuse should be @ heating element. Is it a resettable fuse or a traditional (needs to be replaced) fuse? Also, would this fuse cause the timer and motor to stop working or just the heat?

  • John Guilfoyle Mar 20, 2011

the fuse is the part with two blue wires . it measures three tenths ohms in one direction and three ohms in the other. on the two hundred ohm scale.

  • John Guilfoyle Mar 20, 2011

it started heating and runnin once. whilei blue wires were hooked to fuse. how do i test push to start switch

  • John Guilfoyle Mar 20, 2011

I am at my wit's end. The Fuse looks good. (blue wires) The other unit in your picture is the thermal cutoff. There is power going through the Red/Red-White wires. There is continuity throught the Violet wires. I have checked the Push-to-Start button and it is getting continuity through it when I press. Any other ideas. It has started once today. But I don't know why. What other items could cause it to NOT run at all?

  • John Guilfoyle Mar 20, 2011

The Door switch looks like it's shot. The Black Plastic tip is broken off. I have looked it up online.

How do I bypass it for tonight/testing? White/Orange/Blue wires on Plug in.

  • John Guilfoyle Mar 20, 2011

Done. I was over-thinking the problem looking for a Cause and effect explanation. It Was the Door Switch. plain and simple. If the Light had been working inside, I might have noticed it sooner, but the bulb was blown. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

First and most importantly, have you checked the thermal fuse ?

Let me know and we can go from there.

    Hi John,

No on that particular design of dryer the fuse is a non-reset type unfortunately and it is located on the blower housing at the back.

    i.e.

When it trips/opens it will terminate power to all the functions/devices and will need to be replaced.

If you're experienced you can simply use a jumper wire or join them together to confirm or dismiss ...asisde from ohming it out of course.

Let me know how you make out and I'll try to help in whatever manner I can. Good luck.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

That shouldn't matter, all that is important is continuity usually checked on X1 setting. If you feel comfortable join the wires (blue, yes) and see if it starts. I'll also take a look to insure the belt isn't broke or off thereby activating the "kill switch".

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    Hello again John.

If you look at the switch you should see a small illustration on the side showing which contacts should be closed (unless you have a wiring diagram, I do not) when the button is pushed "in".

    i.e.

With your ohm meter you should be able to determine if the contacts are indeed closing when you depress the switch.

I'll watch for your reply if that doesn't do it. You haven't mentioned whether you ruled out the belt switch, door switch, etc. What about the timer itself ? You mentioned that seemed to be a culprit previously...that kinda raises a flag.

    Let me know, good luck.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    John,

I know diagnosing something like this can be tedious, (especially trying to follow suggestions from afar) but what about the door switch ?

You also said the unit did start at one point. it sounds like a contact closing sometimes but not closing at other times...including now.

Based on this I'd certainly think it was a contact in a switch like the door or in the timer, but there is also a chance of a wire broke inside the insulation...it's just a matter of tracking it down. Do you have a diagram ?

The door switch can certainly trick people into thinking it's OK, because it serves as a safety, but also a light switch so when you open the door the light comes on and it won't allow the dryer to start if the contacts inside the switch don't close...even if the door is closed.

Let me know if this is something you can confidently rule out.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

    John,

Looks like we where posting at the same time.

If you jump white to blue or white to orange should do it. Anything but orange to blue.

White is neutral, the blue either goes to the light or start. The orange same goes. One is for light, the other for start.

I don't have a diagram, but it's just a matter of jumping either of the color to white.

    Macmarkus :)

SOURCE: dryer will not start...checked belt and is

If the lid switch is defective, the washer will not function or work at all. It is located inside the washer main housing near the door frame. When you close the door, the switch is activated by an actuator. You have to raise or open the top or front panel of the machine to reach the switch. Replace if found defective.

The Hum most commonly means that the drum belt on your dryer is probably broken
There is a simple way to test for this.
1 remove the clothes from the dryer.
2 put your hand inside the drum and turn it. If it is easy to turn, the belt is broken. If it is difficult to turn, the belt is good. You may be looking at motor problems.

Almost all of the time, it is a broken belt.
The link below has the full procedure for changing the belt.
Hope this helps,

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.
