Make sure it is in a damp place. Feel the coils that are abouve the pan one should be warm and the other should feel cool. If not maybe you are hearing the fan turning and the compressor is not comming on.

Not up on the unit, but water condenses on the evaporator of an a/c unit dropping onto a tray, as self evaporating, would assume that the drain from that tray is fed to the top of the compresor, which will have a tray around the top, heat from the compressor will evaporate the water, same as with a fridge. In dehumidifier mode, water would need to be collected, rather than evaporated back into the atmosphere, defeats the object other wise. so is lower tank around compressor? that would be for a/c mode upper tank for dehumidifier

Tip

Dehumidifier VS. Air conditioner

A dehumidifier is basically the same thing as an air conditioner but both coils (condenser and evaporator) are in the same unit meaning a dehumidifier exhaust warm air in the same room it is in. running a dehumidifier would make an air conditioner run more because of the warm exhaust, when you run an air conditioner it acts like a dehumidifier and dries the air. As far as saving energy it all depends on the size of the AC and dehumidifier and the size of the room. If you want warm dry air, use a dehumidifier; if you want cool dry air run the AC but not both.
How do all these parts fit together to pull moisture from the air? It's fairly simple, but very effective:
  1. A fan collects air from the surrounding area and pulls it into the dehumidifier.
  2. As the air passes through, it comes into contact with the dehumidifier's cooled coils. These coils use condensation to pull moisture from the air. The collected moisture remains on the coils and drips into the dehumidifier's reservoir.
  3. The dehumidifier reheats the air and exhausts it back into the room.
A dehumidifier usually has a removable plastic bucket for are reservoir; most buckets also have a place where you can hook up a hose so the collected water can drain straight into a floor drain or pump. This frees you from having to remember to dump out the water. But don't worry too much about the reservoir overflowing -- most dehumidifiers also have an automatic shut-off. If you're using a dehumidifier in extremely moist conditions, however, or if you need to keep your dehumidifier on all the time, you should look into a unit with a built-in condensate pump, which regularly pumps water out of the unit's reservoir rather than simply relying on gravity to empty it as a hose does.

Kenmore 54351 Dehumidifier is leaking -- water isn't going into the tray, but seems to be leaking out into the floor.

Mine is doing the same thing. The bucket is dry and the floor is flooded, so it is not an inability to condense, and it is not that the bucket has overflowed, and the bucket does not have a leak. It had been working great and then this suddenly started happening, it's as if the water is not flowing along the proper route and instead is gathering behind the bucket.

It collects some water but it also spits water out

The dehumidifier has a non-removable tray under the coils (they look like radiators) that collects and drains the water away. If the tray or drain gets clogged with dirt or slime the water doesn't drain away well. Some water is picked up by the fan and is blown out the vent. Take the covers off the machine and give everything a good cleaning. If you get water on any electrical parts, let the machine dry thoroughly before plugging in.

Royal Sovereign Bucketless Dehumidifier that is not running

I have had the exact same problem with my RS dehumidifier and I can tell you what the problem is not. I tried replacing the pump because I had surmised (incorrectly) that it had failed and that is why the water tray was filling up and shutting off the dehumidifier. I had also checked to see if the pump would pump water, which it would not. After scouring the internet for days and finally deciding just buying the pump itself was not an option (I was not going to spend $48 for the pump from RS since this one only lasted about a year and from what I have seen I was lucky) I decided to buy a fog machine($20 at walmart) and use the pump out of it. Spliced it in and IT WORKED GREAT. It pumped the water out and shut off when the tray was empty...just like it should. Then it turned the pump back on and off about every 3-5 seconds. After much more trial and error (more error than anything) I thought I had it figured out. When I wiped out the water tray, to the point where it was dry, the pump would not turn on until the water reached the wires. It would pump out the water and shut off the pump. AWESOME...problem solved. It then started the pump up again and it cycled about every 3-5 seconds. This would eventually burn this pump as well. The only thing left is that the control board, or some component on it, in this hunk of junk is bad. If anyone can figure out the issue with the dehumidifier wanting to turn the pump on when there is no water in the tray that would be great. I completely wiped down the tray and removed the scale build up to eliminate the possibility of that completing the circuit between the two wires.
