When the freezer defrosts, water drips into the refrigerator. I assume a tube is disconnected. How do I get to the area between the freezer section and refrigerator section to look at it.

Sounds like the defrost drain line is blocked, what is the model number?is it a top mount freezer on top?if so remove the back inside wall of the freezer, unplug the fridge or if you have the tech sheet usually found on the bottom kick plate it will tell you how to put the machine into defrost, this will help melt out the ice, when you remove the back wall melt out the ice with a hair dryer, next you have to clean out whatever is blocked in the drain, below the evap coil you'll see a hole, that's the drain,i use a steamer to blow through the drain, this works the best, you can try a turkey baster or anything that will blow through the line, when you think the line is clear, pour hot water down the drain,if it drains through you're done,if not keep at it until water will drain through.

My refrigerator has water leaking from the freezer into the main refrigerator compartment. How can I stop that?

Hi,

Ok, you have too sources of water in the freezer section. one from the ice maker if you have one, other is defrost. Either one can cause this, check the drain under the evaporator, most likely the drain is obstructed and the water has no where to exit so it builds up and drains into the lower section (gravity). Te drain can be found under the evaperator behind the false wall in the freezer section. Good Luck

Our kenmore top freezer is leaking (dripping water) inside the refrigerator section from around the dial area. Can fill up a small bowl in about 12 to 24 hours.

Most likely your defrost water drain is plugged. You will have to pull the panels off the freezer, to expose the evaporator. the defrost water drains by gravity thru a hole in the pan under the evaporator. Clear it of debris and or ice, check for any accumulated ice. reassemble. Remember to turn off power before attempting repair and be careful not to bend or puncture any refrigeration tubing

Hi we have water dripping from the freezer into the main area of the refrigerator and was wondering how we can stop this leak...we turned off the water hose to the ice maker and it still leaks...

The defrost drain tube is froze up. Unplug for 48 hours with the freezer door open or take the evaporator cover off the rear panel in the freezer section & defrost with a hair dryer being careful not to melt the plastic. Confirm the drain is draining by poring water through As you watch it go into the drain. pull the unit out & remove the cover off the back to access the drain pan. Make sure there is no junk in the end of the defrost drain where it goes into the drain pan.

I have a whirlpool imperial refrigerator; freezer on top; with icemaker....water is leaking from the freezer section down onto top shelf in refrigerator, near back, any help??

Hello and Welcome to FixYa!
Actually the leaking water is from the evaporator coil unit.... Under normal conditions,Self-defrost refrigerators usually dispose the water generated during the defrost cycle through a tube or channel that directs the water a pan (Known as Drip pan), commonly below the refrigerator unit....
The channel or tube is clogged and the water is leaking to the refrigerator unit, so you need to clear that contamination....Once the blockage is removed, the generated water will move through that channel/tube directly to the drip pan and there will no water on the top shelf in the refrigerator compartment. This is all you need to do....

Best of Luck,

The defrost drain tube is clogged located in the freezer section behind the freezer back wall. use hair dryer and hot hot water to clear this tube.

Have an 8yr old Kenmore top freezer. Water is dripping from top of refrigerator section, from back right side of a vent. Have made sure food is not blocking circulation in freezer. Help!

Your freezer has a drain tube located behind the: freezer ice tray back rear plastic cover; It leads to the defrost tray at the bottom of the refrigerator. remove the back rear plastic cover, the drain will be located at the right side of the coils.
flush the tube out using a funnel and, a pan of hot water. empty the floor defrost tray as you do this.

Maytag fridge water dripping from inside freezer side

This sounds like the evaporator drain may be clogged either in the freexer compartment or at the outlet to the drain pan under the unit. Every defrost cycle the defrost element makes water by melting the ice on the evaporator coils. If the drain is clogged there is no other place for the ice to go. Many times the drain may just have ice buildup in the evaporator drain funnel that can be corrected with a manual defrosting.

To do this manual defrosting all you do is first unplug the unit then remove everything from the freezer compartment. After that place a fan blowing into the freezer section for a little over 2 hours. Please NOTE this will make more of that pesky water mess so be ready to tend to the mess as it presents itself.

After the 2 hour fan session plug the unit back in and reload the freezer compartment with previous content. Monitor for the possibility of the water manifeting itself again.

In addidtion to the above there is a drain pan catch basin in the bottom of the unit near the compressor. They are usually white plastic on Maytag units and not to rugged. Make sure that the drain pan is not loaded with debris. There is about a 1/2 inch diameter opaque plastic line that drains into the catch basin. That is the Evaporator darin tube. Ensure the very end of the tube does not have caked up debris in the very end of the tube. Sometimes this tube cakes up and then the debris dries hard inside the tube near the end. Make sure the tube is free of foreign objects and clean.

After all of the above / cleaning and clearing / manual defrosting it is still making water then most likely the lower panel under the defrosting element / evaporator may have become disconnected allowing defrost cycle water from the melted ice into the freezer compartment vs exit via the drain. To fix the disconnected power metal panel problem the rear freezer panel would have to removed to re-attach / repair the metal panel that guides the water into the evaporator drain.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Refridgerater

It could be the defrost thermostat located on the condenser coil on the left side of the fan in the freezer compartment... or else it could be the defrost timer located in the refrigerator behind the dome cover... defrost the freezer and make sure the drain tube is not blocked nor the air passage which blow cold air from freezer to refrigerator compartment below. Water should drip from freezer down hole into tube to an evaporator pan on the top of the compressor near the floor in the back. Make sure the tube is free flowing by pouring some hot water down it before restarting refrigerator. Rarely the defrost heating element shorts, but a simple continuity test will determine if that is o.k. Make sure the refrigerator is uplugged before checking any of these areas... there's 120 volts all about and with water and ice it can cause quite a jolt!
