Go to start program accessories entertainment colume control. if it give you an error like no sound driver go to http://www.zhangduo.com/udi.html and download that program and find the device right click and find the driver download.

You can go to your device manager to see if there is any unknown devices by right clicking on my computer and then properties and then go to hardware, device manager and see what up there.

Uninstall and re install the audio sound driver

I get picture on Viber laptop, but no sound. How do I get speakers to work and where can I find the speakers.

Check to see if you a speaker icon in the lower r/h side of the task-bar down by the clock.
If the icon is not there right click on a blank area of the task-bar and left click 'properties'
Left click 'customize'
Scroll down to 'Volume' and select 'Show icon and notifications "
Click 'OK'
Close the 2 properties pop-ups.
Right click on the speaker icon and select 'playback devices'
The 'sound' pop up will appear showing whatever you have connected ( speakers or headset etc)
Make sure the speakers are set as default if you have more than one sound device connected.
The speakers should have a green tick (check ) when they are ready to use
Right click on the speaker icon and select 'Open volume mixer"
Check that the volume slider is above 50% and the speakers are not muted (shown as a red no-entry sign on the speaker icons at the bottom of the sliders' If muted click on the slider speaker icon.
Right click on the speaker icon and select 'playback devices' Put the cursor on the blue graph to the right of the icon, right click and select 'test' All being well the computer speakers will respond.

Can't get sound to work

Which OS are you using. Anyhow on the task bar see if the speaker icon is crossed, if yes click on it and deselect mute. If not seen then press left arrow on the task bar, you will find speaker icon, unmute it.
See whether the speaker connection is properly plugged into the green socket marked Output.

IM box will not appear

The system tray (in short: systray, nowadays also called taskbar notification area) is the icon strip normally located near the right end of the task bar, next to the clock.
Some Windows XP installations show a peculiar defect in that some systray icons disappear or, rather, do not appear, when the system is booted and the user logs on. The problem is even more prevalent on systems with autologon. The most frequently affected icons seem to be the speaker icon (sound volume) and the power/energy icon.
This has nothing to do with the hide inactive icons settings. The defect shows up when you don't have any icons set for hiding.
In any case, please make sure for now that you haven't activated that setting. Right-click the task bar, click on Properties, uncheck the last check box. You can reactivate it later if all other problems are identified or solved.
Check your Startup folder and the starter registry entries through Start, Run..., type: msconfig, press Enter, to check whether the programs are really started at system start, or use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see whether the processes are running.

My polk audio speakers from a prior hp computer are very, very quiet on my new compaq system. what can i do?

The audio setting in your new computer is set to low level. Right click on the speaker button at the right hand bottom corner of your task bar,Then open the volume control from there. push the slider up in the volume control and also on the wave. You can push the slider up for the CD player as well as PC speaker also if any of these are also kept at a low level. If you do not have a speaker icon in the task bar, open control panel,(click on start and you will see the control panel selection, double click on it) and double click on sound and audio devices. Under device volume, push the slider from low to high. while you are here you can click on "place volume icon in the task bar" You can also click "advanced" and select the appropriate speakers here, like desktop stereo speakers or surround sound or whatever suits your speaker. click ok to save this and that is it.
