The reason why windows won't reconize it as a boot drive is because you have to format the harddrive to NTFS. You have to connect it as a secondary drive on another machine and format it. To do this you have to
click on start, right click on 'computer' and click on 'manage'. Once on 'computer management' click on 'disk management' and select the disk you want to format, right click on it can click 'format'.
Hope this helps.

SATA Hard Drive Type The Dell Optiplex GX280 Takes?

Hi,

It makes no difference providing the computer motherboards support SATA interface.

SATA 1 and 2 drivers are in the BIOS. If all the computers have SATA 1 you can upgrade the BIOS to latest version via Dell's support website.

Generally an indication that the Hard Drive isn't detected
Things to check, go to BIOS F2, reset defaults and reboot, see if the HDD is seen. If it is, the battery on the motherboard is likely dead and needs replacement (Watch battery at Walmart, 3 dollars)
If the HDD doesn't detect after resetting the BIOS, then most likely a Hard Drive failure

Unable to upgrade onboard graphics on dell gx520

Try disabling your onboard graphics in the BIOS. Some BIOS allow this. If you have a sound card, disable the onboard sound too. Count your beeps. they contain a code. Go online and "Google" bios codes. This should give you a starting point to diagnose the problem.

I'm trying to install a DVD burner into my Dell GX520 (mini tower) and can't work it out ... can anyone help?

If you install the DVD drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive using the second connector, then the jumper on the DVD burner has to be set to SLAVE.
If you elect to install the DVD burner on the cable which is connected to the second IDE controller (this is the preferred way), then the jumper setting can be set to either MASTER or SLAVE provided there are no other devices on this cable.
When the computer boots up go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the DVD burner, if not then the jumper settings on the DVD burner is not correct.
