How to replace a clutch drum on an 09 Electra glide

Pull primary cover and then pull primary chain adjuster and compensator and clutch and chain out and then remove six metric bolts and remove clutch pressure plate and discs and then replace hub and bearing assembly and replace clutch disc and pressure plate etc as you took them apart. Might not cost that much more to simply buy a whole new clutch assembly and have it all new. You will need a bar to lock the primary and compensator together when you loosen and when you tighten the retaining fasteners.

Tighten compensating sprocket bolt to 100 ft-lbs (135.7 Nm) and then reverse the drive locking tool and loosen the bolt one full turn and then reverse the locking tool again and tighten the bolt to a final torque of 140 ft-lbs (190.0 Nm). Install the locking tool again and tighten the clutch hub mainshaft nut to 70-80 ft-lbs (94.9-108.5 Nm).
After the compensator and clutch fasteners have been torqued Install the primary chain tensioner and tighten the fasteners to 15-19 ft-lbs (20.3-25.8 Nm).

2.4L Engine
NOTE It is recommended that the entire procedure be reviewed before attempting to service the timing chain.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cable, Coolant surge tank, Accessory drive belt, Alternator
  4. Install an engine support.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following: Upper cover fasteners, Front cover vent hose, Right engine mount and bracket, Right front wheel, Right lower splash shield, Crankshaft balancer, Lower cover fasteners, Front cover
  6. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise, as viewed from front of engine (normal rotation) until the camshaft sprocket's timing dowel pin holes align with the timing chain housing holes. The crankshaft sprocket mark should align with the engine mark. The crankshaft sprocket keyway should point upward and align with the cylinder bores centerline. This is the normal timed position.
  7. Remove the timing chain guides.
  8. Remove the timing chain tensioner.
    NOTE Be sure all the slack in the timing chain is above the tensioner assembly when removing it. CAUTION The tensioner plunger is spring loaded and could fly out causing personal injury.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following: Timing chain, Camshaft sprockets

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following: Camshaft sprockets. Torque the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm),
    Camshaft sprocket alignment pin through the camshaft sprockets holes into the timing chain housing holes to position the camshafts for timing.
  2. If the camshafts are out of position and must be rotated more than 1 / 8 turn in order to install the alignment dowel pins, perform the following:
    1. Rotated the crankshaft 90 degrees clockwise off Top Dead Center (TDC) in order to give the valves adequate clearance to open.
    2. Once the camshafts are positioned and the dowels installed, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise back to TDC.
      WARNING Do not rotate the crankshaft clockwise to TDC or valve and piston damage may occur.
  3. Install the timing chain over the exhaust camshaft sprocket, around the idler sprocket and around the crankshaft sprocket.

  4. Remove the alignment dowel pin from the intake camshaft. Using a dowel pin remover tool, rotate the intake camshaft sprocket counterclockwise enough to slide the timing chain over the intake camshaft sprocket. Release the camshaft sprocket wrench. The length of chain between the 2 camshaft sprockets will tighten.
    NOTE If properly timed, the intake camshaft alignment dowel pin should slide in easily. If the dowel pin does not fully index, the camshafts are not timed correctly and the procedure must be repeated.
  5. Leave the alignment dowel pins installed.
  6. With slack removed from chain between intake camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket, the timing marks on the crankshaft and the cylinder block should be aligned. If marks are not aligned, move the chain 1 tooth forward or rearward, remove slack and recheck the marks.
  7. Tighten the chain housing to engine stud. The stud is installed under the timing chain. Torque it to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm).
  8. Reload the timing chain tensioner as follows:
    1. Form a keeper from heavy gauge wire.
    2. Slightly, compress the shoe plunger and insert a small screwdriver into the access hole.
    3. Release the ratchet pawl and compress the plunger completely into the hole.
    4. Insert the keeper between the access hole and the blade.
  9. Install or connect the following:
    Tensioner assembly to the chain housing. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Tensioner shoe and retainer. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). NOTE Recheck plunger assembly installation. It is correctly installed when the long end is toward the crankshaft.
  10. Remove the alignment dowel pins. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 2 full rotations. Align the crankshaft timing mark with mark on cylinder block and reinstall alignment dowel pins. Alignment dowel pins will slide in easily if engine is timed correctly.
    WARNING If the engine is not correctly timed, severe engine damage could occur.
  11. Install or connect the following: Timing chain guides, New seal into the front cover by lubricating the seal lip and tapping it into place, Front cover and gaskets. Torque the nuts and bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm), Crankshaft balancer. Torque the bolt to 129 ft. lbs. (175 Nm), Right front lower splash shield, Front wheel. Torque the nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm), Right engine mount bracket. Torque the bolts to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) plus an additional 90 degree turn, Right engine mount. Torque the bolt to 49 ft. lbs. (60 Nm), Upper cover vent hose
  12. Remove the engine support.
  13. Install or connect the following: Alternator. Torque the bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm), Accessory drive belt, Coolant surge tank, Negative battery cable.
  14. Refill the cooling system.
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.

I am trying to replace the chain on my saw. When I try to fit the clutch cover back on the there is a metal band that does not seem to want to fit properly over the wheel, causing the chain to not move...

Your chain brake mechanism is in the "locked" will need to release it. Some husky's have the handle on the cover. If this is the case simply pull the handle towards what would be the rear of the saw and install the cover.
Other saws have the handle on the saw and some little cogs mesh with cogs in the side cover. In order to unlock this one I use two 1/4" x 2 1/2 inch or so bolts in a vise. They get clamped with the bolts protruding vertically above the vise jaws and are spaced so the the tips of the bolt will fit in between the cogs. Study the assembly and determine the direction of rotation required to release the brake. Place the side cover face down over the bolts with the bolt tips in between the cogs and rotate until the brake cams over and releases. be sure you know which direction to rotate the cover as a bit of force is required to get things moving.
Once the brake is released you should be good to go.

Clutch cover smoking

Remove the bar and chain and wash out the clutch internals with spray carburetor cleaner. Clean the side of the engine case, start the engine and watch for oil oozing out of the side port. Clean the bar drive-end small oil passages that go out to the chain groove on each side and clean the entire chain groove. If oil came out of the engine side port ok, then re-assemble the bar and chain, but leave the cover fasteners only finger tight. Tighten the chain so that the chain comes up to the bar, but not so tight that the chain can't be pulled by hand. Tighten the cover fasteners and recheck the chain tension. Make sure the chain teeth cut toward you on the bottom run and that the chain is properly sharpened. Hope this helps!

Chain won't rotate

Assuming that you have a fueled engine saw instead of an electric type, remove the drive cover after releasing the chain brake and backing off CCW the chain adjuster screw. Remove the bar/chain and clean the assortment of parts including the small oil passages that are in the drive end of the bar. Wash out the interior of the clutch assembly with spray carburetor cleaner and let dry. Start the engine without the bar/chain and watch for oil oozing out of a small port in the side of the engine case. If nothing, check the oil pump, lines, and valve/filter within the oil tank. If ok, re-assemble the bar, then the chain over the sprocket and out over the bar. Extend the bar out to tighten the chain, and fit the cover to the saw. Tighten the fasteners finger tight, then adjust the chain up to the lower bar edge (the teeth cut toward you on the bottom run) but not so tight that you can't turn the chain by hand. Tighten the fasteners and recheck chain tension. Check chain oiling by running the bar tip at speed near a piece of cardboard for a few moments--it should throw off a thin line of oil onto the board. Adjust primary chain on a harley davidson motorcycle

after safely supporting rear wheel off ground, remove small inspection cover from primary cover. rotate rear wheel until primary chain is at tightest point. cold engine- chain free play should be 5/8" - 7/8", hot engine should be 3/8" - 5/8". to adjust, loosen primary chain adjuster shoe nut (bolt head is similar to a carriage bolt-square head), sometimes you will need to tap bolt end to free up adjuster, as it sits in grooces to hold at desired level. adjust to desired tension and tighten bolt to 22-29 ft/lbs. then recheck chain freeplay after rotating rear wheel at least one full revolution. If OK, reinstall cover.

I have a Poulan 18" chainsaw. Dispite my best efforts to tighten the chain, it keeps slipping off of the bar. I can use it for about 30 seconds, then the chain slips off.

Make sure the chain brake is off (pull it toward you), then remove the bar mounting nut(s)/bolt(s) and the remove the side cover, bar, and chain. Clean the oil passages in the rear of the bar including two small passages that run from the larger holes out to the chain groove on each side. Clean the entire chain groove and make sure the end sprocket turns freely and is well oiled. Clean the engine face where the bar fits, then start the engine. Oil should ooze out of a small port in the engine case. If ok, then lay out the chain so that it can be inspected for bent links, dry/sticking joints, or missing/badly worn drive teeth. Inspect the sprocket on the clutch outer drum component for wear or damaged teeth. Make sure the pitch of the chain teeth match those of the drive sprocket (is this a new chain?). Check the hub bearing of the clutch drum for obvious wear. If all looks good, fit the chain around the clutch sprocket, then slip the bar into the the engine mounting space and work the chain over the entire bar. When setting the outer cover, make sure the adjuster tang fits into the related bar hole, then attach the clamp nut(s)/bolt(s), run up finger tight. Use the adjuster to set the chain tension--it should just pull the lower part of the chain up to the bar plus a little more. Check that you can move the chain by hand without any binding, then tighten the clamp bolts/nuts firmly. Recheck that the chain is properly tensioned. If not, re-loosen the clamp fasteners and re-tension the chain. When the clamp fasteners are tight, the tension must be rechecked. Hope this long-winded response helps!

Chain will not move freely. When hitting gas will

Did anyone explain how a chain brake works?
Pull the forward most handle as far aft as possible. It should click if it was tripped. Wearing gloves can you easily rotate the chain?
Remove the clutch cover. If it seems stuck the chain brake is tripped do not force it off, reset the brake. Inspect all interior parts for small twigs or pieces of tree that have jammed the brake or clutch. Anything beyond this please see the dealer that sold it to you. HTH
