Question about Dell Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have an Optiplex GX280 SD running Windows 7 and have tried to install a Radeon HD 4550 graphics card into the PCI-e slot. It fits mechanically, with the appropriate low-profile bracket, although the VGA socket is left dangling - but I'm not worried about that at the moment. In the set-up menu (F2) I selected Auto for video, and I plugged my VGA monitor into the card, but I just get a blank screen. I have installed the driver.

Hi have you tried pressing Windows + P or otherwise making the radeon the default monitor? Depending on the type of the monitor you might have to force the system to display the picture on it (usually with older models), because windows will not detect them.

Are you sure the card is securely fit into the slot? Please confirm by checking if the fan attached to it is running or not. If you are still getting a display on your built-in adapter then the card has not been fitted properly or is faulty.

Your system has, from factory a Benicia #IPIBL-LB motherboard and has a PCIe x16 slot. You could go with any card PCIe x16 that is within your power range. I personally like the Gigabyte, Asus, Radeon HD cards because you can get sound and audio out of the card, unlike the Nvidia cards. The card you would more than likely be looking for would be a midrange card going anywhere from 40.00 to 90.00. There are many to chosse from but, I would get one that is Windows 7 or at least Windows Vista ready. This AMD's site and this card would work for you. It requires
300w supply and would do a good job.

Dell gx280 wont run I installed new video card in pci e slot

I had exactly the same problem on my friends Dell GX280. It will only let you use the onboard card or the new radeon card not both together. In the end we had to buy a Radeon card that was made specifically for two monitors and disable the onboard card on BIOS. It would not let us use the two seperate cards in unison.

The pci express slot on that computer is an option, so it may not be enabled automatically when shipped, I would suggest rebooting and go into the BIOS settings and make sure the PCI slot is enabled. Then strile F10 to save and exit, reboot and try it again.

After downloading the updated drivers for the Radeon HD 4550, my sound stopped working. I uninstalled the drivers and the software, reinstalled the software, and it still does not work.

You could try to rollback the driver to the previous working version. Just select the driver tab from the properties menu for your videocard and choose Roll Back Driver.

Upgrading graphics card onto gx280 motherboard

You need to find a "PCI Express" video card. Your Motherboard does not have an AGP slot. There are lots of them to choose from. Better to pay more now and get more memory on the video card than to regret the purchase and buy another one. IMHO

Optiplex GX280 Low Profile Graphics Failure

According to the Dell website your board has a 16X PCI express graphics slot. If so, you can ask for any PCI express graphics card at your retailer. The memory size and performance of the card will depend on your budget.
Hope you find this info helpful.
