I would start by cleaning the fan, vents and heatsink. Use a can of compressed air. You may have to open the Laptop to clean thoroughly with the air and a light brush, use ESD protection as well. . Improve air flow from the bottom of the laptop and the side vents, a Laptop Cooler is a option. Hopefully you haven't done damage to vital components due to overheating. make sure the cooler fan is getting power test the leads that attach to the cooler make sure the connection is good and not faulty
also you should clean the cpu make sure there is no dust built up on the fins of the cpu
(dust will cause static) to computer overheat and lots of unforseen problems
also you purchase a portable usb laptop cooler pad

I have had this problem, I elected to purshase a cooler.
The cooler is just a device that sits under the laptop and plugs into the USB port.
Some laptops were not designed to be very cool, so they need some help.
You could google laptop cooler of if you have a BestBuy close you can visit them.

This is caused by the fan and cooling system.
Disassemble your laptop, remove the fan cooler, clean it up, replace the paste on top of your processor, tighten and screw the cooler fan again.
buy your daughters laptop a laptop cooler with built in USB fans i had similiar problems with my wifes hewlett packard compaq cq bought a laptop cooler fixed the problem
(if you replaced the cooling fan why does'nt it run)
