Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower

Open Question

Briggs 098902 Yard Machine. No Spark at spark plug--renewed coil and followed install instructions. disconnected STOP wire from underside of coil and still no spark. Flywheel magnets (3 one side)have magnetism but not on other 2 on opposite side. Could be the the problem?

SOURCE: yard machine 21'' push mower runs 2 to 3 seconds cuts off.

Tip the mower up on it's side with the dipstick tube on the down side and collect it in a suitable container. The gas you can do the same. When I drain old fuel, I mix it with a lot of fresh fuel and a bottle of dry gas then run it in my car.

check the gap on your plug. .030 is what it should be. also make sure that your
kill cable is working properly and not grounding the engine out.
the gap for you magneto should be set to .010 to .012
loosen up the magneto insert a standard business card or 3x5 card
then turn the flywheel so that the magnet on the flywheel pulls the magneto into it. then tight the magneto mounting screws down. try spark now. always use fresh gas. -no-water- if in doubt throw it out.
gas is BAD after only 30 days.

You can make sure your carburater is clean. Clean the filter. Some time you can get a enpty coffee can and pour some gas in it and rinse the filter out repeatedly. Check the oil also that should get you back on the green..............: )

Hi,
My dad always taught me, rest his soul, that basic 101, if you have gas getting to spark, SOMETHING out to happen.
I'll ask a series of questions and propose some possible solutions. Hopefully we'll crack this mystery. Warning, this might be a tad lengthy... ha
1. Is the spark plug firing?
To check the coil that sends spark to your spark plug and the plug itself:
You can remove the spark plug from your engine and reconnect it to the spark plug wire while it just lays on your mower. pull the starter rope (make sure you're holding down the kill lever on the handle). Look at your plug end as you pull the rope.
Got spark? If yes, go to the next step, flagged ***. If no, look at the end of your spark plug that would go into the engine. The "L" shaped finger should be gapped from the small circular shape on the plug... this is the "gap". Your manual may provide specs on how wide this gap should be. If there is no gap, your plug won't work properly. The "L" shape is a soft metal and can be bent... create the proper gap. Try the test again to see if the plug is sparking. If not, you may have an issue with your coil.
***Yes to spark. Let's look at the gas issue now. OPTION 1. I will tell you that in my experience, water in gas is a major culprit for a mower not running. You've replaced all the filters... good.
I'm not sure of your mower, but most models have a "bowl" bolted to the bottom of the carburator. Sometimes moisture can get in the gas, get trapped in the bowl and won't go away or won't allow gas to get to the spark. Loosen the bolt... it's ok if gas from the bowl spills from this, the bowl doesn't hold much gas and it won't drain your tank. Plus, this means your carbuator is allowing the gas from the tank to the bowl. As you are looking at the gas spilled on the mower deck, see if there are beads of water in it. As you know, water and gas doesn't mix. This would be a tell tale of the problem. I would carefully remove the bowl from the carb and wipe it dry, then reassemble the bowl.
To be on the for sure side that you have no more water in your system, you could disconnect your fuel line from the gas tank and drain it out. Use a jar or container... you can see water in the bottom of it. You can reuse the gas too... just don't include the water!
OPTION 2. If your carb and tank are now H2O free and you're still getting to results, you may have a clogged jet on your carburator. This little pin-hole passage allows gas to pass through to the spark. Sometimes a mower sitting up a while, can cause a laquer effect to gas and it can block this passage. Removal of the carburator from the engine is required and a simple pin can be pushed through this passage to knock a "plug" out.
Geez I hope I didn't miss anything! ha

No spark after renew of coil and plug.


Assuming you have read other posts here about air gap and have it set approximately correct, the next thing to do is disconnect the cutout wire from the coil (small wire with spade connector). When you hit the kill switch, this wire is grounded to the chassis of the saw, which prevents the ignition coil from generating a spark. Often, the insulation on this wire can fail, allowing the wires to short against a metal part, or the kill switch may be faulty.
If you have spark with this wire disconnected, check the wire itself for any breaks. If it looks good, then the only thing left to check is the switch.
****Don't try to start and run the saw with the wire disconnected, because if it starts, you'll have no way to stop it****

Engine won't fire-no spark. New plug.


Check stop switch mechanism (kill switch, safety interlock cable). Check for damaged coil wire to spark plug. Make sure coil wire is completely seated onto spark splug. Sometimes the coil wire gets damged and shorts out to the shroud.

22 hp 2plugs 1 side not firing


Sounds like you may have a bad spark plug or coil..first remove the plug wire from the one not firing..using a rubber handled pliers hold the plug wire close to the plug tip or any metal part of the motor..and crank engine if you see a spark it most likely is the plug..pull the plug out and place the wire back on and do the same thing holding the plug close to the metal, if no spark change the plug..if none coil is bad..just follow the plug wire back to its beginning..the coil. It is attached by two bolts or screws,,check and see if they are tight and there is space between the coil and the flywheel..if it is loose or no space reset the clearance by using a business card as a gauge between the coil and flywheel and retighten and check for spark..If everything iis tight and clearance is ok..remove the coil and replace with a new..use the business card as a gauge...good luck.

Check for spark from the coil if you have a spark tester use it if not remove plug and leave it attached to the coil wire turn engine over if you do not have spark either the ground wire is not releasing or coil is bad

I have a 18 hp briggs engine. no fire with coil wire unplugged. bought new coil, and installed it. it cranked up and ran for about 3 min. and died. again no fire. i left it for about 4 hrs. came back...

I think that the problem you have is not with the coil.
let me explain : when there is the need to stop the engine simply we push a button or use a lever in both cases what it simply does the coil is grounded to earth this stops the spark supply to the spark plugs . find the cable which connect from the switch on to the coil because this cable
intermits to short to earth stopping the spark going to the spark plug ( replace cable this will prevent the engine to stopping )

Try this locate your coil / magneto and disconnect the kill "shut off wire " and try to start if it starts your switch may be bad or wire broken..if still no spark using a rubber handled pliers ...Pull your plug wire and place a screwdriver or similar metal piece and in the plug wire now bring the screw driver close to the engine block or Frame if spark it is your plug..if not your coil needs replaced...not a hard job just use a business card to set clearance on your coil..good luck

Inspection

Inspect for the correct routing of the spark plug wires. Improper routing may cause cross-firing. Inspect each wire for any signs of cranks or splits in the wire. Inspect each plug wire boot for tearing, piercing, arcing, carbon tracking or a corroded terminal.
If there is any corrosion, carbon tracking or arcing indicated on a plug wire boot or terminal, both the plug wire and component it was connected to should be replaced.


Removal & Installation

3.5L Engine

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the left side spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  3. Remove the left side plug wires from the retaining clips.
  4. Rotate the engine for access as follows:
    1. Set the parking brake.
    2. Shift the transaxle into neutral.
    3. Remove the engine mount strut bolts. Swing the engine mount struts aside.
    4. Install the Engine Tilt Strap J-41131.
    5. Pull on the engine in order to rotate the engine forward.
    6. Tighten the strap.

  5. Remove the right side spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  6. Remove the plug wires from the retaining clip.
  7. Remove the spark wires from the ignition coils.
  8. Remove the plug wire assembly from the engine.
    NOTE If you are replacing the spark plug wires, the spark plug wire conduit and retaining clips should be transferred to the replacement wires.

To install:
  1. Install the right side plug wires to the ignition coils and then the spark plugs.
  2. Install the spark plug wires to the retaining clip.
  3. Rotate the engine back to the original position.
  4. Install the left side spark plug wires to the ignition coils and then to the spark plugs.
  5. Install the spark plug wires to the retaining clips.

3.9L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove the intake manifold cover.
  3. Remove the left side spark plug wires as follows:
    1. Disconnect the left side spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
    2. Disconnect the left side spark plug wires from the ignition coil.
    3. Remove the left side spark plug wire clips from the intake manifold and heater inlet and outlet pipe.
    4. Remove the left side spark plug wire assembly.

  4. If removing the right side spark plug wires, the engine must be rotated for access as follows:
    1. Set the parking brake.
    2. Shift the transaxle into neutral.
    3. Remove the engine mount strut bolts. Swing the engine mount struts aside.
    4. Install the Engine Tilt Strap J-41131.
    5. Pull on the engine in order to rotate the engine forward.
    6. Tighten the strap.

  5. After rotating the engine, remove the right side spark plug wires as follows:
    1. Disconnect the right side spark plug wires from the spark plugs and ignition coil.

  6. Remove the right side spark plug wire clip from the ignition coil bracket.
  7. Remove the right side spark plug wire assembly.

To install:
  1. Install the spark plug wire assembly.
  2. Install the right side spark plug wire clip at the ignition coil bracket.
  3. Connect the plug wires to the ignition coil and spark plugs.
  4. If the engine was rotated for access, return the engine to the original position.
  5. The remainder of the installation is the reverse order of removal.

The spark plug wires by squeezing the locking tabs (four each side)
CAUTION
The spark plug wires must be connected to their proper ignition coil terminal. Mark spark plug wire locations.

To Install:
NOTE: The procedure is for either LH or RH ignition coil
Install or connect the following:
The ignition coil
The bolts
Torque to: 44-62 inch-lbs (5-7 Nm)
The ignition coil electrical connector

The spark plug wires (four each side), into their original positions by squeezing the tabs


CAUTION
The spark plug wires must be connected to their proper ignition coil terminal.
