To configure the hard drive as a slave drive, you need to set a jumper on the hard drive to SL (slave)
The other jumper settings are MA (master) and CS (cable select).

Pin connection for 'master ..slave

I assume these are IDE drives since SATA doesn't require jumper settings. . .You will need to set the primary drive jumper to master[ma] & the secondary drive jumper to slave[sl]. Some systems require dual hdd systems to have both set to the cable select[cs] jumper. Check your motherboard or system manufacturer manual to see which setup your system requires. If you lost the manual most manufacturers have it availablr on their website under the support link. Hope this helps.

Hi i have a 10.1gb Maxtor model 31024H1 IDE hard drive and i need the jumper setting for slave

slave is NO jumpers at all

(Master) - The vertical jumper over the J50 pins is configuring the drive as a Master. The horizontal jumper over the J48 and J46 pins is in the Storage position.
(Master with CLJ) - The vertical jumper over the J50 pins is configuring the drive as a Master. The vertical jumper over the J46 pins is in the Cylinder Limitation position (CLJ).
(Slave) - No jumper is required to configure the drive as a Slave. The jumpers over the J48, J46, J44 and J42 positions are both in the storage position.
(Slave with CLJ) - The jumper over the J44 and J42 positions is in the storage position. The jumper over the J46 pins is in the Cylinder Limitation position (CLJ).
(Cable Select) - The jumper over the J48 position is configuring the drive for Cable Select. The jumper over the J44 and J42 pins is in the storage position.
(Cable Select with CLJ) - The jumper over the J48 position is configuring the drive for Cable Select. The jumper over the J46 pins is in the Cylinder Limitation position (CLJ).

Hello

Not met this drive, so not sure whether this is a drive issue or a Windows issue.

If Windows in showing you as not authorised, it could be a permissions issue - you can try starting in Safe mode, logging in as an account with administrator rights. Then go to properties on the drive and take ownership of the drive and all subfolders, so that you can then set whatever permissions you wish.

If it's drive-specific, I can't help. Sorry.

Cannot get harddisk

check both hard drives for jumper position. A typical layout will be: master jumper in master position (see label on back or top of drive), then slave drive jumper in slave position. These jumpers are small and sometimes require the use of needle-nose pliers. Also, the data cable issue: A typical dual drive cable looks like one connector that is physically at the end of a cable yet farther apart than the other two. This gets connected to the motherboard. At the other end of this cable, you will see a connector (for master drive) and nearby, another connector (for slave drive). If your drives support the CAS mode (cable select), then it is irrelevant which connector these drives belong to (assuming you use the 2 closer connectors). If not, it is is imperative that the drive jumpers be properly positioned as described above. Finally, if the above steps were followed and still same problem, then change the BIOS setting from AUTO to forced type. Some BIOS's require the CAS mode to be present on both drives. This can get complicated, but simply write down the settings from each drive (ex: cylinders, sectors, heads...) and then type in these settings at the BIOS screen.

Can't See HDD in Windows Explorer

Afraid Excelstors hard drive repair tool requires the drive to get wiped to fix the errors not like seagate or western digitals, only thing worth trying is put in a windows xp disc and boot off the disc, Press R on the first screen to do a repair in like dos mode. it will take you into a black screen with a dos prompt, type this in CHKDSK C: /R then press enter it will take about 30min-1hr but has a good chance of getting the drive to read.. once complete take out xp disc and restart pc all the best John
