Question about Dewalt 18v 18 Volt 1/2" Compact Battery Drill Dc759

1 Answer

I have an 18 volt Dewalt drill that will not work when the trigger is pressed unless your turn it or orient it in a certain way and hold it there. I suspected the switch, so I took the drill apart and checked the positive and negative leads and the wires for any cracks, but I saw nothing. I purchased this drill in July, 2008. How much would a trigger switch cost to replace if that's the problem?

How to change the chuck on 18 volt cordless drills

Set the drill to reverse. Hold the chuck, press the trigger and open the drills chuck to it wide open position. Now,, take the correct size allen wrench and insert it into the back of the chuck to remove the screw. Turn the screw clockwise to remove it. Notice I said clockwise, just the opposite of what you might think. Hold the chuck with your hand or a pair of large vise grips and press the trigger to unscrew the chuck from the drill. Rotate it counterclockwise to remove it from the drill. Reverse the procedure to install the new chuck.

How do you know if the trigger is bad? getting dc volts to trigger but nothing out when I press it.

It's not unusual for Dewalt triggers to go bad and it appears you have correctly tested the trigger. You can test the motor by wiring it directly to the battery but hold on to it and only give it a short burst of power so it doesn't spin out of the case. Dewalt triggers are fairly easy to find online but shop around, they're not cheap.

How do I change the drill bits and then tighten so the bits stay in the drill?

The chuck will not turn. So to loosen just turn the black plastic counter clockwise. The chuck will loosen. Or you can hold the black part on the chuck tight and put the drill in reverse and slowly squeeze the trigger and the chuck will loosen also. Do the opposite to put a new bit in. Put the drill in forward and hold the black part of the chuck and squeeze the trigger with the bit in place and it will tighten down on the bit.

Dewalt cordless drill dc988- drill motor works intermitantly when trigger is pulled. Works a little better as it warms up. Im thinking vsr switch, brushes, or motor/armature. please help...

Test the brushes by catching it in a stalled condition when you have it triggered, then rotate it slightly. If it takes off suspect the brushes or a dead segment on the comutator.

If it doesn't respond to this, then consider the VSR trigger... open it and test by bypassing it when in stalled condition...

Dewalt 18 volt compact drill

yes this is normal the spark keeps motor from stalling out by taking away the friction spark by making own spark
the clunk is the drill brake so you dont brake your hand when screw goes in all the way unlike old drills that kept going even when your hand was attached to it

You should try to charge the battery again. Or you can try to fix it or then its time to get a new battery.
