The easiest way to do it properly would be to use a small mixer, with an adapter cable from the outputs (usually 1/4") to the line-in of the laptop (usually 3.5mm stereo).

C1000s hum/buzz on phantom power

possibly the microphone needs more power than your sound card can supply although I cannot imagine as the duet is a good piece of equipment.
Is the duet USB bus powered?
Have you tried another cable? Possibly one wire is defective which means that phantom power will superpose the audio signal. In this case you might hear a hum. By the way this results in 6dB of signal loss. This is why XLR plugs have 3 wires. If connected with a 1/4" jack it has to be a stereo plug (tip, ring, sleeve)

I just bought the GXL2200 CAD microphone without the cabels,(thought they would've came with), what kind of cable do i need?

As with most microphones, these mics use XLR cables. You can get them online or in a music store in many different lengths. What you need is XLR male to XLR female, though most of the consumer-level stores will probably just call them "mic cables." Note that the thing you're plugging into will need to have an XLR input, and will need to provide phantom power in order for that mic to work.

Mic twont turn on

There is no way to directly connect this mic via USB. It requires a phantom power source, through an XLR mic cable.

My at4033a/sm is about 6 years old and only used 2 or three times .plugged it in...there is no sound

I have two words for you...Phantom Power.

Electrete condenser mic's MUST have phantom power to operate. Look for "Phantom Power" button on your Jackie (surely means Mackie) and try it again BUT turn volume down before engaging phantom power or testing mic.

What is the best way to run the mic on desktop

Your condensor mic requires special electrical handling usually reserved for proffesional audio equipment, not a PC. You will need two pieces of equipment, a short XLR cable and an adapter cable.
1) Behringer PS400 Ultra-Compact Phantom Power Supply.
This will supply the mic with necessary Phantom Power.
2) Rapco Horizon ISOBLOX Transformer Isolation 1:1 BLOX Device
This will isolate the Phantom Power from your computer, allowing it to work as necessary.
The adaptor connector cable you need will be a female XLR (with pins 1 and 3 shorted, pin 2 hot), through a cable connect to a 1/8" mini plug. They connect in that order with a short XLR cable between 1) and 2). .

No sound being picked up when connected, may be as I am using a xlr to usb connection and the power is coming off a laptop , how would I fix this? Thanks

The Rode NT1A requires phantom power of 24-48volts DC. The USB socket on your laptop will only supply 4.5volts.
The solution will be to buy a separate power supply or to connect it to your computer through a mixer that includes a phantom power supply option.

Son wants to buy CAD GXL2200sp studio microphone package and wants to plug into laptop. Will that work?

Hi,
for purposes of recording quality, I would recomend getting and external sound card. M-audio make a good range. You would need to have a +48v phantom power supply for this unit to work. The sound card you buy should have this. A Pc or laptop won't

I got a cable to hook my MXL 990 condenser microphone to my computer and i get no sound. it wont record!!!!!!!!! its a 1/4 male to #-pin XLR female cable

Professional condensor type mikes require a phantom power source to work. That will be a balanced (read XLR) connection from source to preamp and the preamp must be capable of supplying the power. These units cannot be used in an unbalanced circuit (like 1/4" or computer mini-pin). Your best bet for the setup would be to get an external power supply box that can also convert the signal from balanced to unbalanced. That would be what the mike plugs into and then that plugs into the computer. You're probably looking at about 50-100 for even a cheap one that will work well. Companies like Sweetwater and B&H should be able to steer you toward a decent basic unit. If you happen to have a mixer (which is why you bought the good mike) then it may have phantom power for some of its mike inputs.
