Question about Canon PowerShot A70 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Canon A70 works in replay. When mode switch is placed in shooting position, viewfinder remains black. This is intermittent problem as sometimes the image shows. If I move the mode switch from replay to shooting position with inward pressure on the mode switch, the image will appear in the viewfinder. Is this a problem with the mode switch? The CCD was changed by Canon in 2008. Thanks.

The repair was made some nine years ago. This suggests that the camera is way beyond its expected life span - retire it, and purchase another.

SOURCE: Canon A70 stays in replay mode

Gerry, The mode switch is a very common problem that causes the camera to remain in either play or camera mode. The stem breaks off the top of the switch and no longer functions. If this is not the case, the flex harness (operations unit) can get torn on top if the camera has been dropped. If the switch appears to be good, check for ground switching between the two outer legs of the switch, the micro gets a low signal from the mode switch to determine what state the cameras in. Good luck, this is a nice camera! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectroncis.org)

SOURCE: LDC Monitor remains black. Have reset the default

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please see this link for more info.

Affected cameras with this problem include: A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S230, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110, IXUS V2/V3/300/400/430/500/II/IIs, IXY Digital 200a/300a/320/400/450/500/30/30a

Cant see through my view finder on powershot s3 is

Your camera has an electronic view finder. To switch between the view finder and the display, you have to press the DISP. button several times and look what happens in Shooting mode and what in Playback mode. If only the display will come on, and the viewfinder stays black the camera will have a defect. If you can't use the camera anymore, because you only can shoot with the viewfinder, consider buying a new camera, because any repair will be more expensive than a new camera with the same quality.

No display except in stitch assist and camera shoot mode

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Camera screen remains black when I turn on shooting mode

Turn the camera on. With the screen showing, press the DISP button and this will give you a selection of different screen views i.e. squares for aligning shot squarely; black - thru viewfinder only; etc. Different modes will give you different screen displays i.e. P setting screens are different to when you have the camera set on AUTO.

Hope this helps.
