Question about Toshiba 65HDX82 65" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Distorted Picture Hi my Toshiba 65HDX82 picture is distorted and shaky it started off about three months ago and would clear up after about 10-15 minutes and that turned into about 20-30 now it's completely distorted and never clears up. My tv has PIP and it divides the tv in half and the left side is distorted like viewing full screen while the right side is picture perfect so for the last month I have been watching tv in PIP mode with the left side covered. The color is great too. I don't have a local repair guy and the closest service guy is about 70 miles away and I really can't afford to throw away money on a long distance service call only to find out my tv is junk. Do you think it's repairable and if so any ideas to what maybe causing this. Again It's a 2002 Toshiba 65HDX82 projection wide screen tv. Thank you for taking the time to read this problem. Sincerely David Feltner

Hi. We recently bought a Toshiba 57H83 rear projection from my in-laws. They rarely watched it. It's 3 years old. We transported it to our house. Had it for about 2 weeks and it started doing this thing where it suddenly goes from perfect picture to a scrambled mess with horizontal lines running through the picture. At first it did it only for a few minutes, then would self-correct. It's been doing it for about a week and has gotten worse. It does it more frequently and takes longer to correct itself. The closest repair center is over 70 miles. We don't want to sink the time and effort into taking it to a dealer if it's going to be so expensive to fix. Any help out there??? Thanks so much

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Toshiba HD ready TV ct 90158 makes high pitched sound

A high pitch sound can be a capacitor losing power it would sound a bit like a fire work. most have back up on the board but it put more pressure on them the more times you use the tv. would check them and replace. all of them can be 5 in a row in some models.

Muffled sound, blury picture

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

If its shaky, zig zag, or torn looking, etc your hyper module has gone out. You can get the repair parts and instructions on www.TvRepairKits.com

If it just looks 3D or wavy...and is not moving around...its your convergence that has gone out.

Toshiba 65hdx82 has a squiggly distorted side to side picture from all inputs. It gets slightly better after it is warmed up but still very bad. When you go into a menu screen that seems to be OK.

Fuzzy/ distorted tv pic

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
