SOURCE: set up router/modem as instructed

Problem can't be solved as described, a fixer would need more details.

What kind of modem/router is it?
What instructions are you working from so far (you say, "as instructed" so I take it you're looking at a Quick Start Guide of some sort?)
How are you connected to it?
What http address are you going to (E.g. some routers use 192.168.1.1, others 192.168.1.254 or various alternatives)
What happens when you enter that address on a browser?
Have you set your computer's address to a nearby address so it can talk to the route?

If I had one guess with not enough information, I'd say you need to set your PC to an address one different from the target you're going to.

You can reset the router to factory default settings.
  1. Before resetting the router make sure you have a computer connected to it via a network cable.
  2. A link for the linksys manual for the WRT54GL is listed in the next step.
  3. http://homedownloads.cisco.com/downloads/userguide/1224638971110/WRT54GL_V11_UG_C-Web,0.pdf
  4. If you have a different router, go to this page and enter the model number of your router in the search field at the top of the page. http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT54GL/download
  5. The manual for your router will give you the default IP address for your router.
  6. Download the manual to your local computer, you will need it later.
  7. Get a pen and paper you need to write some things down.
  8. Write down your wireless SSID and password.
  9. Go to your computer. Go to the "Start" menu and click the run button, OR in Win 7 go to the "Search Programs and Files" field at the bottom of the menu.
  10. Type in the word "cmd", do not type the quotes, and press enter.
  11. In the cmd.exe window that pops up type the following command "ipconfig/all".
  12. Scroll up to the first entry and look for the section titled "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection".
  13. In that section look for the entry "DHCP Server" and write down the address, it will be 4 numbers separated by periods. This is the address your router is currently using.
  14. Now type in "ipconfig/release" and press enter.
  15. Now go to your router.
  16. On the back of your router there is a hole labeled "Reset" with a small button inside.
  17. Press and hold the reset button for approximately 5 seconds. This resets the router back to factory default settings.
  18. Wait 3 minutes for the router to reset.
  19. Go back to your computer and your cmd.exe window. Type in the command "ipconfig /renew" and press enter.
  20. Now type "ipconfig /all" and check the IP address like you did before. You should now have a different IP address. If your IP address did not change then restart your computer and continue following these instructions.
  21. The manual for your router will give you the default IP address for your router.
  22. Open your browser on the computer and type in the default IP for your router. Many linksys routers use 192.168.1.1.
  23. A login window will appear. Leave the username blank, the password is "admin", omit the quotes, and press enter.
  24. In the admin tool change the default router IP address the what you wrote down a few minutes ago and save the settings.
  25. Now change the admin username and password. NOTE: Make sure you write them down this time.
  26. Configure wifi. If you use the same SSID and password as before all your wireless devices will connect without problems.
  27. Make sure you enable DHCP if you use it.
  28. Set your other settings as needed.
  29. Make sure you save your settings in the router admin tool.
  30. You should be good to go.
  31. Have fun.

How to Configure your Linksys router with wireless security

Launch your Internet Explorer, Netscape or your Mozilla.

On the Address, Search or URL, type: http://192.168.1.1, then hit Enter/Return. A login screen will appear. Type admin for the password and leave the username blank or empty then hit “OK”.

Note: If it doesn’t take admin as the password you might have changed it when you have ran the RUN ME FIRST CD that came with the router so try other passwords.

If you cannot remember the password, I regret to tell you but, you have to reset the router and, reconfigure it again. Next time, remember the password to avoid unnecessary reset and reconfiguration.

To reset the router to factory default
1] Press and hold the reset button for 30 sec., after that
2] Unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for another 30 sec.
3] Then, plug back the power keep holding down the reset button for 30sec., after that
4] Release the reset button.

Note: Configuring WEP in the router varies depending on the model number and firmware version of your Linksys Router.

Cisco Interface (If your Setup page has a Cisco Logo)

Go to Wireless Tab > Wireless Security > Click the drop down arrow then select WEP:

Regular Linksys Router Interface (If your Setup page has a no Cisco Logo)

Under Setup > Click WEP Key Settings or Edit WEP Key Settings

Using passphrase 64bit
Encryption LEVEL 64bit > type a passphrase > click Generate > copy key1 on a piece of paper (10hex character). Then hit Apply or Save Settings.

For manual key entry of 64bit encryption:

(e.g.: A0B3F58C9E, 0123456789, ABCDEFABCD). Then hit Apply or Save Settings.

Using passphrase 128bit
Encryption LEVEL128bit > type a passphrase > click Generate > copy key1 on a piece of paper (26hex character). Then hit Apply or Save Settings.

How do I set a password on my wireless after it has been installed?

Start your web browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1

A pop up window will appear asking for a username and password. leave the username blank and type admin in the password. This will allow you entry into the router. Once there you can navigate using the menu bar on the top to set things like what channel, what type of security for the wireless and such. Channel selection is not needed unless you find a lot of interference with other devices like a cordless phone. Broadcast SSID is another setting. If you disable it, then any device that you try to link to it will require you knowing the "name" of the network. I would leave it on broadcast SSID.

You should change the "name" of your network from the default "linksys" to anything of your chooosing, and then in the wireless security tab, create a "passphrase" using WAP personal settings.

If you choose to change the password to enter the router settings, you need to make a note of it. Don't do anything with the username, just change the password, that way when you need to make changes and type the 192.168.1.1 the only thing you will need is the password again. Don't make the settings password and the "pass phrase" the same.

Just look for the reset button on the router and by pushing it for about 10 seconds it will revert to it's factory settings and be an open router. Bear in mind it also resets your entry passwords to something like password or password1

I have my linksys wrt160n connected but with no password, i cant find my install cd. i want to set a password.

Take it easy. You don't need any installation cd. Connect your computer with the router and after the connection between pc - router established, click on start - run and at the white line type "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. At the new black window type "ipconfig" and hit enter. Write down the numbers at the last line referring for Default Gateway. Open a browser window and at the address bar type the number you write down before and hit enter, without www etc at the beginning. You will go at the router's entry settings page. In case you don't know the user - password I have to tell you that the default credentials for Linksys routers are:
for user type "admin", without the quotes
for password type "admin'' or"1234" or none, without the quotes. Now on you can change any settings as you like.
In case of the above procedure don't work, locate and press the reset button in order to get the router at the default setting and retry the procedure.

Can't remember password for my router and need it to get on the internet with another device with my linksys

You can accsess the router config menu by using your browser. Type in 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into your browser. That will bring the screen up to enter your user name and password. If you have not changed it the default is username:blank(no entry) and password is:"admin". If you have forgotten this password then you will need to use a pen to push and hold the reset button for more than 4 seconds to re-set the password to the default(this will clear all the router settings to factory default and disable WEP/WPA settings). Once in the router config menu you can then look at/change the WEP or WPA security key that every computer needs to connect to the router.
