Question about LG 42PG60 42 in. HD-Ready Plasma TV

1 Answer

I have an LG 42PG60UD. I am unable to access the menu on this set which I have had since new. If you press the menu button on the remote or the bottom of the set, the menu bar comes up on the screen. If you try then to select any of the sub menus, highlight them and press enter, the TV reverts back to normal viewing and the menu icons disappear. I am therefore unable to access any of the settings in this TV. I feel I need to get it back to the original factory settings so that it can update itself when tuned in. I cannot get into the reset function though because it is in this menu. Everything else seems to work fine but it is slowly going out of tune because once again I can't access this tuning function in the menu. Thanks..any help appreciated...Trevor

Thanks for your reply. No the buttons on the TV do not help either. The update mode on the TV was never switched on and I slowly seems to be losing control of the whole thing. I think that you are right that it needs to update itself somehow. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Trevor

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

Do I have to take the back off to see this number

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

OK...It will take me a little while

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

I've got all the screws off the back, should the back just pop off?

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

I have got all the screws off, but the back doesn't seem to want to let go. I can see the board thru the vents, there is a bar code and then some numbers, Is that what you are looking for?

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

    Are you still there?

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

Yes I've got the back off. There is a square circuit board on the bottom right side where all the plugs go into and then there is a large rectangular one over to the left side as you look at it from the back, which one and where is the number you are after, thanks

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

Thanks for that, I appreciate your time with this but if you can indulge me, what has happened to the set and what does this part do?

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

    Righto..thanks for everything, I will give it a go...Cheers

  • subybrumby Mar 21, 2011

The chap from FIXYA was most hel[pful and patient. Just have to buy the part, install it and see if it works. Thanks

  • subybrumby Mar 27, 2011

I have bought and installed that circuit board but it has made no difference. What is happening is that when you select 'menu' via the remote or TV buttons the menu screen comes up on the TV,
This then has about 8 items to choose from. If you select any of those items the menu icons disappear and the TV just goes back to the ordinary screen showing what ever channel was on.
I therefore cannot adjust any tuning or setup or anything that is in the menu sub selections. I suspect that it is in the programming somewhere in the software. So my TV is slowly going out of tune and I can't do anything about it. I can't select and picture settings or anything. Any more thoughts on this. I've spent $100 so far. Thanks Trevor. PS..Is there anyway to get the TV back to its original factory settings, because that function is in the Menu also and I can't get at it. Cheers

  • subybrumby Mar 27, 2011

I'll have to take the back off again. It didn't have trouble powering up or resetting. It just came back on with the same problem as before as though it hadn't been touched.

Did you try the buttons on the tv? See if it works and let me know. I am starting to think it needs a firmware update though

Ok tell me which country you have purchased it in so that i can get you a firmware update. I don't want you to end up with a tv that is stuck with the wrong region

JUst checked out the LG AU site and there were now updates available. That leaves us with only one option. Replace the logic control board and that should take care of it. Would you like to do it yourself?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Mar 21, 2011

Its an easy replacement. All you have to do is to unplug the cables from the older board and plug them into the replacement. However to ensure that you get the exact replacement board, you are gonna have to get me the part number off the board itself. It is located near the the main A/V board(the one with all the inputs) and has a large number of ICs on it, including the microprocessor IC

  • eagle338

Yes you have to. The boards are located inside the tv.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Mar 21, 2011

    No problem at all.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Mar 21, 2011

Yes. For the back to come off, look for hidden screw under labels

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Mar 21, 2011

The part number will be like EBR-xxxxxxx. Here is a picture of the board just to be sure that we are both on the same page. Get me the number and I will try to find you a replacement.

This part is the processor equivalent in a tv. It is the board that executes your commands from the remote or from the buttons. If the board fails you are bound to se problems like the one you are facing.

You are most welcome. Thank you for using Fixya!

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Mar 27, 2011

The new board will be at factory settings. Reason if there is no power for a while the circuits will reset themselves to defaults. Anyways I will refer to the service manual and see if we can reset the settings from there. We will also look into the possibility of a faulty input board(the one that has all the buttons and IR sensor). It is possible that there are cold solderjoints and the exit button is somehow getting pressed.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Mar 27, 2011

But first I would like you to have a look at the input board. See if the connections are OK and if there are any sings of damage near the solder joints of the same

I understand that. Take your time and let me know when you have done so

Access the DVD setup menu by turning on the unit without a DVD in the drive.

Press simultaneously the "arrow down" button on the right side of the DVD recorder and the "clear" button on the remote control simultaneously for about six seconds to access the options menu.

Use sideways arrow keys on remote control to navigate to OP6. Set value of option to "8F" (for region free) and press "enter" on remote control to save changes.

When message saying "save ok" appears press "menu/list" on remote control to exit options menu. The unit will reboot and is now able to play any DVD.

Hi there,

One possible solution to access the service menu on LG tv's is as follows with steps 1 - 4:

1. With the TV on, press and hold the MENU button on the TV front panel.
2. While holding that button, press and hold the MENU button on your remote.
3. Hold both buttons for ~5 seconds until the service menu comes up on the TV.
4. Release the remote MENU button first, then the TV MENU button.
If you are looking to reset the lamp indicator then continue with the following steps 5 - 11:

5. Press and hold the ENTER (or OK) button on the TV front panel.
6. While holding that button, press and hold the MUTE button on the remote.
7. Hold both buttons until the Lamp Life Hours show up on your TV screen.
8. Release the MUTE button first, then the ENTER button on the TV front panel.
9. Make a note of the lamp hours if you want.
10. To reset the lamp hours, press the SELECT button (the one between the four arrow keys with two concentric circles on it) on your remote.
11. It will ask you to confirm the reset--press SELECT again to confirm.

To verify you've reset the hours, you can repeat steps 1-9 above and then just press the EXIT button on your remote.

Hope this helps. Regards, James.

Cannot access channel 73 on TV2

If you are unable to access the TV menu using the buttons on the TV itself it is possible you can with the TV2 remote if it still controls the volume etc. for this TV. If it doe not you will need to find a code for your set in the manual for the receiver or you can go to the following link to find that info as well.http://tech.dishnetwork.com/departmental_content/TechPortal/content/tech/receiver/625.shtml
Assuming you have control of the volume still press the small TV button on the top left of the remote. Now press the menu button and you may be able to access the TV's menu. If so you need to run a channel scan/auto program the TV. You may need to use the buttons on the TV still to maneuver through the menu.
If you are still unable to access the menu you may need to purchase a universal to access the menu.
