Question about Poulan Garden

1 Answer

I have a Poulan 18in/38cc (50 th anniversary model) chain saw it was a work horse. I cannnot get it started. I removed the old fuel and added new and changed the spark plug and set the gap at 25 thousand. I set the choke and started it it ran for a few seconds and then shut off. Repeated attempts to start with the choke out nad in half way did not get any results. Is the 25 thousand gap ok? The auto matic oiler is not workinmg either. Any suggestions. Bernie

You have not actually said what model this is, however, it souds very much like fuel starvation, main things to check are, the filter on the end of the fuel hose in the tank, replace this as a matter of course, now check all the fuel hoses up to the carb, any signs of cracking or fuel leakage and the hoses will require replacment. The oil pump is normally behind the clutch and sprocket, there will be a gear arrangement here whish needs checking, there will also be a pick up hose and filer behind the pump, this may well need cleaning
Let us know how you get on.

My Poulan 18in 40 cc WildThing ChainSaw Won't Start.

Start with basic tests, drain the fuel tank and fill with fresh fuel oil mix, remove and reolace the fuel filter on the edn of the fuel hose, check the fuel hose up to the carb for leaks, remove the spark plug, rest it on the side of the cylinder ( away from the plug hole ) cramk the engine and check if you have a spark.

I have an 18" Poulan chain saw, 25th Anniversary

Yes there is.If you can get the broken pieces out of the tank.there should be a filter on one of the broken lines.you will have too buy some gas line 3/16.take some wd-40 and spray the line.this makes it easier to slide through the hole in tank.then loop it around to gas cap hole and reinstall filter.then make sure filter is at bottom of tank and hook back to carb.

Gas ratio

Most saws built within the last 30 years or so can be run with 40:1 using modern synthetic saw oils. A number of late model units run 50:1. Make sure to premix the fuel and oil before adding to the saw. Hope this helps!

I do not have the manual for this saw, Poulan pp3816 pro 38cc, could not get it to rum, not sure how log it has been since it last ran, put newgas hose on due to it was broke. Saw will start when primed...

A manual can be found here:
Poulan.com/CurrentModels
http://www.poulanpro.com/node4043.aspx
Type just the model numbers (choose the suffix after the list is provided).

It sounds as though the fuel system is plumbed in reverse, it should be similar to this.
