Question about Dishwashers

After washing the dishes are not clean. There is a white film over-all. Our water is "hard." I have had this dishwasher several years.

Check your rinse agent dispenser and fill it if it is empty. If it is not working or you can't find one, you can buy solid rinse agent balls - just hang one in a dishwasher rack and leave it there until it is used up. I have had good results with both Jet-Dry ® and the Wal-Mart store brand - the film came off of my dishes on the next wash after I refilled my dispenser.

Check the holes in the spray arms for clogs or other visible foreign material. These are generally made to be removed without using tools (hand-operated threaded nuts) so you can clean out any garbage inside them.

Check the owner's manual for your model. There may be a dishwasher cleaning procedure, such as pouring a cup of vinegar into the bottom of the machine and running a short wash with no soap or dishes and a no-heat drying cycle. If you see a build-up of soap residue in the machine, you may want to do this, and cut back a little bit on the amount of soap you use.

It probably isn't a problem with the dishwasher.
Manufacturers of dishwashing detergents have recently been required to stop using phosphates, resulting in a lot of upset people complaining about the same thing you described.
You can try adding vinegar to the final rinse of the cycle, or you can install a water softener.

Dishes not clean

Run a hot wash without the dishes and a quart of white vinegar plus detergent which should wash out any oily film left by the water folks when they were 'fixing' whatever. You may have to do this several times until the water runs clean as before. Hope this helps!

My dishes are getting a white powder film on them after they wash

The problem is hard water. Go to www.dishwasherfilter.com and get their new product. It filters the water and takes out the hard minerals that cause spots and clog dishwashers. It is very affordable and has a money back guarantee.

I think I can help. We have the same dishwasher and we have very hard water. The dry powder detergents don't work well. We have found Cascade All in One Gel detergent works best and we use only a little; don't go beyond the first mark in the detergent dispenser, regardless what the instructions say. We have found using more of any detergent makes white film. Don't fill up the pre-wash side either. The Cascade All in One Gel does both at one time, so no need to put some in the pre-wash side. Also keep Jet Dry in the rinse dispenser and make sure it is set up higher, turn the arrow to 4. Try that and move up if needed. Next, we put half a cup of white vinegar in the dishwasher, just pour it in the bottom each time, right before we wash the dishes. This works GREAT! We used the white vinegar in on our former dishwasher of 9 years and never had any trouble with any film buildup. The vinegar cuts all the film and makes glasses look terrific.

If you are still are having trouble, cut out the Heated Dry at then end. The heat can cake hard water on your dishes. It may not dry the dishes as well, but it seems to stop any buildup. Using the vinegar though, we use the Heated Dry and still have no film buildup. So for us, we use a small amount of Cascade All in One Gel detergent (buy this basic gel, no added anything), 1/2 cup white vinegar poured in the bottom and Jet Dry in the rinse dispenser. We always have sparkling clean dishes with no hard water buildup. If you don't have real hard water, but just a little hard water, you might try decreasing the white vinegar to 1/4 cup and increase it if you start seeing the white film build back up. Also don't overload the dishwasher. Make sure there is space in-between each dish and have all plates face toward the center.

Make sure you turn your sink faucet on to as hot as you can get it and run the water until it is hot, then turn off the faucet and turn on the dishwasher. This helps to keep the dishwasher from running longer, which would mean more hard water swishing around longer if you don't heat the water, and you know what that means, plus the heating element has to work harder to get the temp up and that makes it burn out quicker. Once a month check your jet sprays, that turn around in your dishwasher, because the little holes can stop up with hard water gunk and this will cause film on your dishes to build up. Take a toothpick and crush the gunk in any holes and make it go out of the holes. Hope this helps you!

Chalky dishes in dishwasher

Are you in a location with "hard" water, meaning that the water has alot of minerals in it like calcium? If so, you may may need to get the water treated with a water softener system, either at the dishwasher or for the whole house.

Kenmore dishwasher 15899100

Dennis, Im assuming your model number starts with 665. This model had a service flash on it regarding the upper spray arm. The upper spray arm has been redesigned for better performance. Part number 8269022. This could be covered by Sears if you mention the service flash, 22-714. Other issues that can lead to this problem are; water hardness, if your water is over 7 grains of hardness, this could to this film on the glasses. Try pouring 1/4 cup of Glass Majic into the bottom of the dishwasher. Also run one cup of white vinegar to clean the dishwasher. Make sure the water temp. entering the dishwasher is 120 min. to 150 degrees. Catriver..post back.
