I need to change the oil pump in a stihl 026 chain saw but I am not sure how to access the pump. I believe it is beneath the armature but I am not sure how to take it off. Any advice or a schematic? Thanks, John

Removing the Oil Pump

  • 1

Pull off the spark plug's rubber boot. Unscrew the spark plug with the socket wrench. Remove the spark plug and insert the piston stop tool into the hole. Remove the starter cover and turn the flywheel by hand until the piston contacts the stop tool.

  • 2

Unscrew the brake band's cover screws with the star Allen wrench. Remove the brake spring from its anchor pin with the end of the screwdriver. Caution: this spring is under a lot of pressure and may pop out unexpectedly. Remove the brake band from its seat on the crankshaft.

  • 3

Remove the E-clip that holds the washer, sprocket and clutch drum to the crankcase. Pull them off the crankshaft. Unscrew the clutch's bolt with the socket wrench. Loosen the bolt clockwise and remove from the crankshaft. Pull off the washer. Remove the clutch shoes and the clutch spring.

  • 4

Twist the worm and drive spring clockwise and remove them from the crankshaft. Unscrew the oil pump's mounting screws. Take the oil pump off its seat and remove from the crankshaft. Remove the bottom washer.

  • 5

Disassemble the oil pump. Knock out the spring pin on the bottom with a punch. Pull the bottom control bolt from its hole and remove the O-rings. Pull the end plug off housing and remove the pump piston, spring and washer.

Where is the decompression valve for stihl chain saw 026?

If it has one, it will be directly in front of the spark plug. Most 026 saws did not have one, however, an 026 Pro did.

Chain lube oil leaks when not using but not sure where from.

How do you set the chainsaw down when not using it? You're supposed to lay it on the flat side when not in use, or it will leak.

Have an 029 farm boss with 16 inch bar upgraded to 20 inch all was checked and bought from a stihl dealer they even put it on. went home used it for about 15 min and the bar and chain went dry no oil going...

It sounds like you may have something stuck in the oiler port or groove of the bar. You can use the pointy end of the chain file guide to clean the bar out and give it a shot again.
Good luck

My 024 was never correct right out of the box and did not pump the correct amount of oil to the chain which caused quicker loss of sharpness and excessive heat to the bar. The local repair shop replaced...

Stihl offers a higher capacity oiler for the saws, more than likely it was shipped with the lower capacity. Also dealers will install the same oiler as what was in the saw unless you specifically request differently. Let me know if you need any more help, Daniel.

Where are the oil holes that grease the chain on a 026 wood boss

karey678,

Remove the bar and chain assembly. You may have to remove the sawdust from the oil hole to find it but it will be opposite the hole in the bar ahead of the drive sprocket on the top half of the bar. Usually when you remove the bar and chain the hole can be identified by the oily sawdust in the area that I just mentioned.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Why does bar oil drain out of my saw when not in use,and seems to feed excessive oil when in use? is there a solution ?is it broken, out of adjustment that i dont know about,or is this what i payed...

It's the nature of the saw. I've had mine about 10 years and it's been that way since new. The Poulan uses over twice as much oil as my Stihl 026 but all in all it's a good saw.

How to adjust chain bar oiler

The Stihl 026 PRO does have an adjustable oiler and it is located on the bottom of the saw just below the clutch drum.
Stihl also builds an 026 "Standard" without the adjustable oiler, however, the hole location for adjustment is still there.

The 026 PRO will also have a decompression valve on top of the saw to make the rope easier to pull during startup. If you have the DECO valve you should also have the adjustable oiler. Hope this helps.
