Question about Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I've downloaded documents & pictures on my passport yesterday. Everything seemed to work OK. I did however, have to plug it into the USB port twice to get a connection. I'm quite sure the downloads were copied. Today, I plugged my passport into the USB port on my computer there is no connection. Nothing appears on the screen indicating the passport has been plugged in no matter how many times I try and regardless of which USB port I use. I have an old jetflash memory stick which I tried plugging into the USB port and the computer recognizes it instantly. No problem there. I don't undrerstand why the computer won't recognize my "Passport Essential" when I plug it in. I've been given a service number: 031811-8446802 Thanks, Jack

Sometimes, portable drives need more power than a USB port provides. If this is a laptop, be sure it is plugged in to power and not running off battery. Also, if you have TWO usb plugs on the end of the wire, plug them BOTH in. This provides the extra power needed.

I have a WD Passport External Drive. (WD1600ME-01) I know it works but all the wires I have that fits the Drive don't seem to work. When I connect the wires, I can hear the Drive go on and shortly aft

You may first want to try disconnecting any other USB devices, to guarantee that the drive is the only power-drawing device. Drives typically need all 500 mA that a USB port normally provides.

Cables do wear out, especially those handled often. Mini-USB cables are pretty common and can easily be replaced.

Need driver & software

The Driver and software are built in, Stored on the WD it's self..
all you need to do is plug it in. It is a plug and play device.

WD Passport is not supported on XP or Vista 64bit
Xp and Vista do not put enough power to the usb ports to fire up the drive.
there is a cable you can get from WD that plugs into 2 USB ports to solve this issue.

The computer doesnot reconigze the disk in the usb port

Unplug your drive and then head over to:

and download the drivers and software for your hard drive.

Then plug in your drive and your PC should then read your drive.

How do i use this. to backup my files. were to plug it in to my dell laptop.

Open "My Computer", and look at each icon, e.g,. 'A:' and 'C:' and 'D:'.

The cable from the Passport will only fit into a 'USB' port on your computer. Your computer may have more than one such port.
Just pick one, and connect it.

Once it is connected, look again at that 'My Computer' window.
There should be another drive-letter, assigned by Windows to your Passport.

Open 'My Documents'.
Click 'Edit'.
Click 'Select All'.
Right-mouse click on one of the selected objects.
Point at 'Send To'.
Click the drive-letter assigned to the Passport.
The selected files will be copied from your 'My Documents' folder onto the Passport.

I purchased the unit and plugged in. Is there something else I should have done. It doesn't seem to be working.

If you plugged it into an unpowered USB hub, it may not be getting enough current. Try plugging it directly into a USB port on the computer. It requires 2 amps to spin up and unpowered hubs only provide 500ma for all connectors, just a quarter of the required power. Or you can buy a powered hub, which relieves the strain on your computer's power supply.

You run MS Windows Update to download and install the latest OS updates. Your WD external HDD should be detected after OS update.

For non updates system, try to connect WD to the USB Port where it worked before. If you have 4 USB ports for instance, try to connect it to these ports one try at a time. Windows XP might have assigned one USB port for your device before when it was working just fine.

Are you using an external power supply for the disk? If not, you might be overloading the USB port. It should not happen, but USB ports are limited in the amount of power they can output. Especially laptops might face such problems.

Do other USB devices still work on those USB ports? If so then the port is at least not broken.
Sometimes you can uninstall and reinstall the USB hubs and controller devices in the Device Manager to fix USB problems.

My computer does not recognize WD Passport WD2500XMS-00

I use a USB extender cable so I do not have to get down on the ground and plug stuff into my USB ports behind my computer. Everything that I own works through this cable except the WD passport drive. (It is a 2.0 USB cable at that so that is not the issue, plus 1.0 should theoretically still work, just not at 2.0 speeds)

SO...I tried to plug it directly into the USB port on the back of my computer and it worked instantly.

Other people have reported a fix after finding that their cable was loose. This USB cable that comes with the drive seems to be picky for some reason. Perhaps these are faulty cables somehow. Hopefully this will help some people.

I had the same issue. Its not a power issue because it shows up in device manager. Heres what I did.

Right-click on my computer and click Manage>Disk Management

Your drive should show up there. Right-click on it. If explore is not grayed out, assign a drive letter to it and you should then be bale to see it in my computer.

In my case explore was grayed out. I had to click on the option to format the drive. After re-formatting the passport explore was available. I then assigned a drive letter to it and I have access again.

I guess somehow using it on multiple computers srcewed up the file-system on it. I was using it between windows and linux.

This fixed my problem.

WD Hard drive no longer works

This is mostly a power issue, but if you use a hub it may be latency as well. Some USB ports limit power to 400-500ma per port, the Passport Essential needs a bit more than 1000ma and won't work at all with these computers. Other USB ports/hubs limit the total power available for all devices combined... this is why, in your case, you can use one drive, but not both.

FYI, higher speed devices also tend to need shorter cables due to latency. (Light & electricity travels about 1 foot, or 30 cm, in a billionth of a second; this limits the size of high speed devices. In layman's terms, latency is the Brontosaurus effect, since the head takes a while to talk to the tail.)

To boost power, Western Digital recommends using a 22" USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (WDCA029RNN) to combine the power of two USB ports into the one Passport Essential USB port--it is also a bit longer than the original 18 inch cable. For all EXCEPT the black Passport Essential drive, you may also the WD Passport™ Power Supply Adapter (WDPS021 for the US voltage version). See Western Digital knowledge base ID 1296 for more on this issue.

Hope this helps!
