Question about Televison & Video

Open Question

I have a Magnavox Plasma 50mf231d/37 that shows no picture or has no sound when it is turned on. I have already replaced two capacitors to prevent the red blinking light, but when I did that I found that the bottom half of my screen was distorted. I was told it was the lower y buffer board so I ordered a new one offline and now when I power it up I am without a picture and sound.

i have the same problem but i play with it by pluging it in multiple times and i hear it click on then off eventually the time between it clicks on then off is longer until i finally get it to stay on .I have to do that everytime i use it . Also the update wont work for me either tried everything. It must be with the power supply becuse once i get it on it stays on, and if i turn it off after its been working for a while it comes right back on perfectly. Only when i leave it off for a few minutes the symptoms start right over. This is what i do for about 5 minutes of plugging it in and out it flicks on and then off about 2 seconds later after that ii finally get it to flck on then off about 6 seconds later. 5 more minutes of pluging it in and out it takes about 10 seconds to flick off this is when i know it is about to work.finnally the green light will stay on and the tv wont flick off you can turn it on and of with the button wait 2 min to see if the picturecomes on repeat last step until it works. This means everything works great exept for the power supply for enitial startup. I beleive its a capacitor . I will check and report back.

SOURCE: Red blinking light on a Magnavox Plasma TV

Here is the solution. For less that 100$ your Magnavox Plasma TV. Model # 50MF2310/37 will be running like a champ.

Issue:

Magnavox Plasma TV. Model # 50MF2310/37 screen has no picture. There is no sound, TV comes on and then after a few seconds clicks and screen remains blank.

Cause:

On the main power circuit board to Capacitors are prone to failure from over load. The caps are 3300uf 10v 105+c capacitors located to the left of the AC power input.

Service:

Magnavox will refer you to a service center. They will advise $$$ for an inspection. They will also want to charge upwards of 500$ to replace the entire board.

Solution:

1. Unplug your TV
2. Disconnect all connections from your TV
3. With assistance lay your TV on its face on a non-scratching service
4. Remove the back panel screws.
5. Lift back panel off
6. The central board is your main power board.
7. Remove all wire harnesses from the main board.
8. Remove all screws that are holding the main board in place.
9. Lift the main board out and carefully place it into a non electromagnetic pouch.
10. Take the board to a Circuit Board repair shop.
11. Have them replace the the above mentioned Caps.
12. Re-install the board in your TV.

NOTE: Replace the caps with 3300uf 16v 105+ high temp caps(preferrably Japanese caps)

This fix cost me 80$ and my time to search for other who had the same issue. Try searching for Magnavox Plasma TV. Model # 50MF2310/37 bad circuit board or Magnavox Plasma TV bad capacitors or Magnavox Plasma TV bad ciruit board.

Hope this all help, Magnavox is should take ownership for this problem and recall any tv's that have these caps in them. The worst part about this is that teh **** from the repair center that was paid 100$ to check the TV, stripped out the screw holes and damaged the case for the TV.

Portland Laptop Repair was awesome. They repaired the board and it looked like new. Check them out at http://www.laptopportland.com/

50" Magnavox Plasma TV will not turn on - Red LED blinking 4x

When you have the red light that blinks four times on the 50" Magnavox Plasma Model 50MF231D/37, you should look for the capacitors on the power board in the center of the of the TV. Look for two 3300uf, 10V, 105c capacitors that have a build up of pressure that has caused the top of the capacitor to look rounded instead of the flat top that will be on all of the other capacitors. Changing these two capacitors fixed the problem of the TV not coming on.
I had more trouble finding the capacitors than changing them. I could not find them locally so I went to an on-line electronics supply store where they were $1.65 each and $8.99 to ship.

OK I have just taken care of both of these problems and now I want to share it with you DIYer's. As for the blinking red it is a software upgrade...go here...http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=US&slg=AEN&cat=FLAT_TV_CA&sct=PLASMA_EXTRA_LARGE_GT43_SU&grp=TV_GR&session=20090902212032_75.92.128.105&ctn=50MF231D/37&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software....and download the software to your PC. Then unzip it to a USB flash drive. Power off your TV. Stick the flash drive into your TV's USB slot, found on the left side, facing the TV. Power it up and let it do it's trick. Pull out the flash drive when instructed. That's it.
Now for the power problem. I noticed that my TV was taking longer and longer to fire up. Once on it worked great. Well this morning it didn't come on. I heard the usual relay click then a few seconds later...two more clicks and nothing. The green LED stays lite but it's dead in the water. So I started surfing the web for common problems found with this particular model. I came upon this forum and saw something about a couple of capacitors. So I decided to look into it. I purchased the service manual online for around $8.00 at https://www.completeservicemanuals.com/philips/magnavox/plasma-television/50mf231d/37-service-manual/prod_677.html. Not that I thought I would need it but it doesn't hurt to have it. So I took my TV off the wall and placed it on my bed face down. Be very careful because this TV is heavy!!! You will need to remove the stand or wall mounts first. Then there are 44 screws holding on the back, 32 long and 13 short. Pull the back off from the top of the TV first, set it off to the side. Now your looking at the workings...in the center is the power supply board. Oh yea please make sure you unplugged from the wall. There are 8 wire connectors to the board, 5 of them come off by squeezing the clip on the back, the other 3 just pull out. OK, there are 8 screws holding down the board to the chassis. Before lifting the board, locate the capacitors first. If the top of the TV is away from you and the bottom is near your knees (assuming it's on your bed) look at the center bottom of the power board. Locate two capacitors that are identical and side by side. Their values are 3300uf 10V. I found that these two buggers were raised on top, kind of bubbled. (if needed I have pictures of the power board, email dstafursky@yahoo.com). I picked the replacements up at a local electronics store for less than $5. I simply replaced them and reassembled the TV. It works killer just like when it was new.
Good luck.

The plasma panel in most cases exceeds the cost of replacing the TV. There is also the issue that they tend to use different versions and makes of panels in these sets. Some panels are made by Samsung and some are made by LG. I would start shopping for a replacement TV at this point.

Magnavox Plasma HDTV Red light

I had a similar problem with my magnavox tv with the blinking light issue. Eventually it just didn't come one anymore. Looking at other forms they said the problem was a bad capacitor number 2074 located on the power supply board. When I opened my tv, I noticed that the capacitor was bulging and burnt up. I bought a new one labeled 2200uf 35v and did some solder to attach the new piece. Put the tv back together and it works like new. No more blinking light. I hope this helps.
