House hit by lightning - Ethernet not connecting to router

Tried a laptop and the connection to the router is good. Tried releasing and renewing IP address, rebooting, the obvious stuff. Any other suggestions?

The problem I had, I've fixed by adding a new network card, as the one
integrated in the motherboard was corrupt.

Most likley the network card is bad. Check if you get any lights on the network card. If there are no lights get a PCI network card for the system. If you get the link lights it could be just corruption on the system. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with a 2wire modem/router combo. The wireless internet connections work flawlessly with all wireless laptops, phones, games, etc. I cannot access the internet on the pc itself...

You may have a problem with your IP and DNS settings. Please use the instructions below

Go to Control Panel>Network Connections and select your local network.Click Properties, then select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).Click Properties. You will see a window like the one below. Please make sure that the settings are all set to automatic for your IP4 and/or IP6 connections.

If that doesn't work, please try to renew your ip settings.

This can be done with the following steps:
1. Open cmd.exe
Windows XP: Start - Run - cmd.exe
Vista/7: Window Button - type "cmd.exe" - Enter
2. Type "ipconfig/release"
3. Type "ipconfig/renew"
4. Wait for connection to establish.

Wrong ip address. No fix w/ipconfig/renew

192. is the beginning of a default gateway IP address and is usually only assigned when you are using a router. I recommend connecting to your router.

Can not get internet connections

First try to reboot your router ... just unplug it for about 30 seconds and plug it back in. See if your router shows back up (assuming you are wireless) or if connected via a CAT5 cable your internet connection gets restored.

If that does not work ... sometimes its helpful to reboot your DSL/Cable modem. First unplug the router, then unplug the modem, after the modem come back up, plug the router in.

Hope these steps help.

Unable to connect to internet

Try going to command prompt and type ipconfig /release
Then type ipconfig /renew after the IP is released. If you like, I could remotely connect and troubleshoot it for you.
