You can get a replacement battery here. http://www.newmp3technology.com/605-battery.htm
By the looks of it, your need to open it up and unsolder the battery contacts and then resolder them.
If you don't feel up to doing it yourself, then try anywhere that repaires PC, laptop and such. Check if they will do it and buy the battery yourself, might be cheeper that way. Also check ebay incase it's cheeper there.
I have a similar problem. I received my Archos 605 two weeks ago and thought the product was awesome. However, I had to call customer service for the plug-ins I was supposed to receive free. I was dropped twice after waiting for 12 - 15 minutes each time. On my third call, I finally received customer service after waiting an additional 12 minutes. The woman was very nice where she finally got me 6 of the 7 the rebate specified.
Today, 09/14/09, I had to call Archos for the broken screen which was a 20 minute wait. It is NOT under warranty and will cost me $155.00 plus shipping. I paid $154.99 total for the unit brand new.
Customer service stated sorry. DO NOT PURCHASE AN ARCHOS -- BY A IPOD. I HAVE LEARNED!
There is a seller on ebay (name is luhahaca) that says he is an Archosofficial Plug-ins reseller. Just search for 605 Plug-ins on ebay. He sells a four pack for only $38.00. I bought and installed them and they work great. Really makes the Archos functional - the way it should come out of the box. Actually, (sadly) the way it does seem to come out of the box - I was disappointed when I received my plug-ins download. All 4 plug-ins = 2kb. Web browser with widgets, extended movie and music capabilities and Real player mode. It seems to me that all of this is already in the Archos, they simply charge extra for a key to access it. It's a shame. Totally worth the price if you have an Archos, but really too bad they feel the need to force their hand into your pocket after you've just given them hundreds of dollars. I think the unit would be reviewed better, and Archos wouldn't look so petty, if these features were just enabled right out of the box. (my opinion anyways)
Contact Archos support and they can provide you the file to repair your disk. Once you have the file stored on your computer, you will then hook up your Archos via USB and copy the file they provide you to the root of the Archos. The direction I got when trying to fix my pop/hissing "If you power on the unit by pressing and holding the TV/LCD button and power button simultaneously the unit will boot into a recovery screen. Once in this screen choose "Repair Disk" and follow the on screen instructions.
When prompted, please place the following file into the 'root directory' of the unit:
Go to the archos website on your PC and download the latest firmware. Once you have the firmware downloaded to your desktop, connect your archos to the PC with your usb cable.
The computer should recognise the archos as an external drive.
Open the archos drive on your desktop and drag the new firmware into the window. The computer will copy the new firmware onto the Archos drive.
DO a safe disconnect from your pc and restart your archos. The new frimware should start to load itself on your Archos when it powers up. You will need to reconnect the usb cable for the downlaod to start running. Once it is finished it will restart itself again. You will probably need to recalibrate your touch screen interface as well. You need to use the buttons on the side of the unit to scroll through the menu to get to the "settings" screen, and then the "display" screen. Choose "calibrate touchscreen" and follow the instructions.
3. Copied update to root of archos drive and rebooted
4. Archoes installed the update and rebooted and came up to desktop again
5. reinstalled plugins (thank god I saved them) copied plug-in to root.
6. Back on the road again
