I haven't used the printer (canon inkjet pixma ip2000) in a couple of years and even after repeated cleaning it leaves ink spatters on the page.

You could try removing the print heads and using a moist paper towel, try to soften the clogged ink. Do not rub the print heads, just press the wet towel against them for a minute or two and then try to run the cleaning again.

Canon pixma iP2000 no yellow will print

Have you tried cleaning the ink pads on the print head using a can of compressed air and blowing from the inside outwards, taking the print head off first. You can usually buy a tin of compressed air in somewhere like PC world.

Smudging

hi i am a certified Canon repair tech on this model. when the waste message comes up this means that the waste absorbers in the bottom of the machine need to be replaced. just clearing the error and not replacing them will cause the waste ink to over fill and backup into the machines printing area smugging the print. there are Canon repair centers privately owned that can replace the waste absorbers and clean the machine. the average cannot take this machine apart into peices to clean it. The waste absorbers are fairly cheap but the labor to do this will vary from shop to shop. hope this helps clarify the problem.
