If you are using regular batteries I can't help you, but if your using rechargeable batteries then the cause is old batteries, after many charges they don't charge well anymore. and you need to replace them

Bought a Nikon Speedlight SB-600 in August. Tested the flash and it fired ok. I took out the flash a few days ago to use at a graduation and the "ready" light did not come on. Consequently it did...

Hi grwcamp, Sorry to hear about it not working at the graduation. Are in the correct position (I am sure you did but, we must start someplace). Look inside, see if there is battery acid in there.
If with new/fresh batteries it still does not work call Nikon. You have a warranty on it so it should be covered.

With new batteries in the flash, and it being off camera what happens when you press the test button. If still it does not flash call Nikon 1-800-645-6689

Batteries got discharged

BEING ONLY 5 MONTHS OLD YOU CAN SEND IT BACK TO THE FACTORY FOR REPAIR IF YOU BOUGHT THIS IN THE USA . NOT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COPY OF YOUR RECEIPT WHEN YOU SEND IT TO NIKON .

Ready light on my SB-800 speedlight

put in a fresh set of batteries. The ready light won't turn on until the flash capacitor is fully charged. And if your battery is weak, it can take very long (minutes!) to fill the capacitor. You still can fire the flash even it is not ready, it will just dump whatever power it stored in the capacitor.

This flash was made in the 1990's for use on nikon film cameras. It wont work in TTL mode on current nikon models, and it has no infrared remote capability like the sb600/800 speedlights, but it can still be fired in manual mode by even the newest nikon cameras. I wouldnt throw it away, but I probably wouldnt use it that much either.

Trigger coil or a flash tube. Flash tube is easier to replace so try to replace that first. Caution before you do anything else when you open the unit locate the main 330v capacitor and discharge it before you work on the unit !
