Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

KEM-400AAA repair Hello and thank you for the referal. I was wondering if you know how to repair the failing laser assembly in the PS3? I have just been replacing them in the units that I refurbish and the new ones work perfect. Due to a short supply, they are becoming very hard to find. In all of them I have seen fail, it has been the spindle that spins the disc that fails to work. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi,

Appreciate the "Ask Me". Replacement parts availability is major concern in my country. Acquisition cost plus shipping makes it often not an economical option.

Most spindle motors require fairly low voltage to rotate. I have used the test prods of an analog multi tester X1 to power them up and to check if they will turn. Incidentally, you can also try using the same scheme to check for winding/brush. Connecting small alligator clips to the tester's test prods so as to continuously provide connection to the wires of the motor (one at least should be unsoldered). You could stop the motor turning and slowly manually rotate it one full rotation. The meter's reading should not vary much while doing so. If there is a deviation, then it is an internal brush/commutator problem and could sometimes be corrected if somehow you could spray clean it with contact cleaner and then WD40. If there is no electrical contact problem but there are spots where the turning is not as freely as the rest, then it is a mechanical problem and would indicate possibly an oilite bearing issue. Again the contact cleaner and WD40 would help.

Some mods that I have tried (which sometimes works, sometimes not) is soldering a 10uF/6.3V capacitor across the supply of the motor and/or a reverse protection diode (1N4001).

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

Glad to be of assistance and appreciate the rating.

BTW, that would mean you now have 4 spare spindle motors.

Understandable, the last time I had something shipped cost me 30USD for the first half kilo of the package. Good luck with the eBay thing.

I have a ps3 with a kem400aca, it was made before 08 so it can with on laser i bought a new one and i was told the 2laser would work but having fitment problems

You must get the laser that is compatible with your system. ACA is an extension for the kem 410's. You have KES/KEM 410 ACA and then you have the KES/KEM 400AAA.

If you have a 'single eye' laser and trying to replace it with a 'dual eye' laser, it WILL NOT work.

Brown Clip KES-400A KEM-400AAA laser - Is it new?

For those who are replacing a PS3 Laser, particularly the KEM-400AAA or KES-400A (these are the same laser, one just has the deck included) you will often see online that there are refurbished “white clip” lasers that have a high failure and “brand new” brown clip lasers that are made by a third party and have almost 0 failure rate.

As someone who repairs PS3s, I would like to but an end to this *MYTH*

There is **no such thing** as a BRAND NEW PS3 laser expect for those made by Sony.

Sony does not sell parts to repair the systems because they do not want customers attempting repairs themselves.

Any web site claiming to be selling NEW brown clip lasers is outright **LYING** to you.

If any third party company did make PS3 lasers they would be promptly sued by Sony.

How do I know all of this?

Well, if these THIRD PARTY lasers are new, and being third party, not made by Sony, why have I frequently opened PS3 consoles with warranty stickers intact, only to find a BROWN CLIP laser?

The answer is because Sony makes these brown clip laser as well as the white clip lasers.

The quality of the lasers depends on the care taken in refurbishing them, NOT the color of the clip.

Find a reliable source and you will be OK.

I should note that I have used both Brown clip and White clip lasers and have seen both fail. Unfortunately these products have a high failure rate, this is simply unavoidable.

Find a retailer that guarantees the item for at least 30 days or that guarantees the item is tested before being sent out. If you do get a bad laser, make sure they will refund you.

Okay, this is a REALLY common problem. It's more likely than not that dust is on your lens. Best bet is to buy a Laser Eye Cleaner disc and hope that fixes the problem. If not than you will have to contact sony. If your still under warranty they will fix it for free. if the warranty has expired, then they will charge you a repair fee

Ps3 wont read any games or discs

Hello. Try to do the reset feature first. Settings >>System Settings>>Restore Default Settings. Make sure you DO NOT do the "Restore PS3" feature. This will wipe your hard drive clean. If that doesn't work try this.
When you put in a disc, listen for the disc to start spinning. If you do not hear that then the laser and/or the spindle have blown out. You will have to get your Blu-Ray player serviced by a pro or Sony. Sony may fix it for free. They know that the drives are failing. So call them first. If you know how to do it yourself, you will need part KEM-400AAA / KES-400A if it is not spinning. If it's spinning and not reading the laser may be dusty or need replacement. The laser by it's self is part number is KES-400AAA. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to hit my "Ask Me" button.

I hope this helps! Good luck to you.
